This is a breaking story. Don't know whether the Taliban were behind it, although the initial report blames a 'good friend' of his. News reports were that he was very corrupt.

'Good friend' kills Ahmad Wali Karzai, brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai

KABUL, Afghanistan — Ahmad Wali Karzai, a brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai and one of the most powerful men in southern Afghanistan, was killed on Tuesday, an official and a family member said.

. . .

Ahmad Wali Karzai was a power broker that NATO officials depended on to keep the relative peace in the south of the country, according to NBC News' Atia Abawi.

"He was the glue that kept Kandahar together," she said.

I think being a conniving and corrupt drug-dealing warlord in the Taliban heartland of Kandahar carries a low life expectancy.

Having met the man personally, my comments are:

Good riddance.

Will be destabilizing for the region, in particular the delicate balance of power in the South.

Is a blow to the broader issue of corrupt governance in Afghanistan - however this is merely the symptom, not the cause.

And happy to chime in further if people are interested / care to engage.

More than happy to hear more...

I don't personally have anything to contribute though.

He used to run a restaurant in Chicago in the 90s, right in Boystown.
Before it closed, Tribune critic Phil Vettel wrote in 1995 about its "slightly exotic" Afghan cuisine.

"Elaborately framed photographs and pretty tapestries hang on the walls," Vettel wrote. "A large, graceful chandelier hangs from the pressed-tin ceiling. Service is attentive and well-versed on the menu."

In a batch of confidential documents released by the WikiLeaks organization last year, Ahmed Wali Karzai talked about how he loved the Lakeview neighborhood.

More like my 'used car salesman' radar.

RTA: He was an ethnic Pashtun, and if you've read 'The Kite Runner', you know a thing or two about Pashtuns. Not that I'd call such behavior homosexual. But it is sort of appropriately done in 'Boystown'.

AntiqueHunter, say on.

More is better.

Well...

It strikes me as very laughable to see the trend with Karzai & his family. Not sure if you recall back in 2004/5 when he was a media darling & on the 'Best Dressed List'. Seems that the word has gotten out that his family is pretty much as nasty as the Bin Ladens. If you do some digging and look at the various businesses that the Karzai family controls in Afghanistan, it is really quite remarkable.

When the whole experiment goes ass over tit and the country falls into civil war & people are wringing their hands about all the money & lives wasted, perhaps someone should consider the brain child that didn't do their homework on the leader they decided to stand behind.

As far as Wali is concerned - he took me on in a meeting once about taxation of (one of his) businesses. That I was working for the Minister of Finance at the time (one step from Karzai's office) seemed to be lost on him. He would've been better off lobbying over my head - which presumably he did, based on revenue results.

It seems that Ahmad Wali Karzai's brother's funeral has been targetted by a suicide bomber who - they say - hid explosives in his turban.

Turban Bomb Story said:
Officials say the attacker was stopped at the mosque's entrance, where he blew himself up.

Sounds like this guy pulled the pin too early.

Turban Bomb Story said:
Tradition dictates that mourners are not searched when attending memorials, says our correspondent, and several tribal elders told him they had not been searched.

Tradition dictates? This is why Afghanistan can't have nice things. It's long past time we quit our little foray in the poppy fields.
