Kanye West for President?

He also said, almost immediately, that he was just reacting to something he saw on tv, and sending out a quick knee-jerk response. Honestly, this reminds me of Joe Rogan's "endorsement" of Sanders - it's not really a thoughtful endorsement at all, but campaigns will rush to tout it as such even when it's just "I dunno, I guess I'll go with Soandso."

Can we then agree on some kind of rule of thumb?

If Celebrity X does not wish to be seen as endorsing Candidate A in an election, best not say, "OMG Candidate B is crazy. Vote for Candidate A!"

Because if you say, "Vote for Candidate A" people might think you are endorsing Candidate A.

True. Ten minutes with her would have revealed her for the idiot she is. Yet they put her on the ticket. :jaw-dropp

Actually...I'm told (and that's as far as my actual knowledge goes) that she was a reasonably capable governor, but terribly prepared both leading up to her nomination, and by her handlers. She was mostly concentrating on Alaska, which, fine that's where she was, and had no foreign policy chops - again, fine when running as John flippin' McCain's running mate in 2008, deflect and say you're learning and what you bring as a woman. He has that one covered anyway.

2008 was interesting, in that Obama won electorally against the heavily favored Clinton in the primaries - Bernie stans, note that the "DNC establishment" can be flattened pretty easily if you play your cards right. I've said before that I thought Mike Huckabee, of all people, would have been a great pick for McCain had the superdelegates given the win to Clinton then - he was at that point pretty good at speaking to nonwhite voters.

Man, how things change.

Palin could have discussed, say, the oppression of women in Saudi Arabia and how she would push that as a woman. Perfectly good answer, and the Saudi government just sucks in general. Instead, it's how physically close Alaska is to Russia, which...who cares? But then again, the right, and certain dimwits on the left, decry this as "Identity politics", while ignoring Dolt 45's obvious white male grievance nonsense - not even "I'll do this for you", so much as "I'll punish them for not being like you".

I think it's better to just not take celebrities too seriously to begin with - if they actually say "I'm endorsing X", or they appear at campaign events and the like, then fine, but if they just say "I'm voting for X"...who cares?

I'm fine saying "Sarah Silverman endorsed Hillary in 2016 after Sanders conceeded", because she spoke on stage at the freaking DNC. Beyonce appeared to give concerts championing Hillary as well. Clint Eastwood famously did his "empty chair" comedy routine at the RNC (and folks - that wasn't dementia, it was a comedy routine). But just tapping something out quick on Twitter, saying "I guess X", or some campaign playing a song at an event isn't an endorsement.

(I also wonder how valuable these singer/actor endorsements are to begin with, aside from getting some press attention, but that's another matter)

There's that "stan" thing again. What is it about Bernie, and nobody else, that makes you want to call his supporters, and nobody else's supporters, a bunch of countries in Asia?

I think it's better to just not take celebrities too seriously to begin with -

Well, I whole-heartedly agree that we shouldn't take celebrities all that seriously, but if you took a look at what happens in the real world which departs pretty sharply from "the world of should" you may have noticed that the President of the United States is one Donald Trump, known as a celebrity real estate guy, who appears either as himself or is parodied in various movies from 1980s onwards, in American wrestling, beauty pageants and on TV in such widely acclaimed works of art as The Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice.

So, guess what? People do take celebrities seriously, and when they have large followings on Instagram and they say "Vote for Trump" on Instagram and their large followings on Instagram read the Instagram posts it is almost as if you could forgive the Instagram followers for thinking that the celebrity saying "Vote for Trump" might be taken for saying "I'm endorsing Trump".

If you've discovered any way to split a hair between saying "Vote for Trump" and "I'm endorsing Trump" you should get your invention patented immediately because you have done it at the level of the quark.

He said "Vote for Trump" not "I'm voting for Trump"! That's the use of the imperative. ("The imperative mood is a grammatical mood that forms a command or request. " - Wikipedia)

It's also a tweet, in the end. Poor grammar abounds there, due in large part to the character limit - and in this case, it was also an incredibly backhanded tweet, since he outright agreed that Dolt 45 is racist. I just can't take that seriously.

(Truth told, the only black person that has outright endorsed Dolt/Pence that I have the slightest respect for is Tim Scott, who I'm told did so at the 2020 RNC. I'm sure Lil' Wayne could babble about why he's chosen to endorse, but to be honest, I don't care enough to look for any such thing.)

West conceeded a while ago.

Or rather, he tweeted "Welp.", and apparently plans to run again in 2024.
