A twisted Staten Island husband -- who wasted away his days watching infomercials and the History Channel -- allegedly beat his wife to death because she didn't pay for premium channels during his hospital stay, law-enforcement sources said yesterday.

Thomas Scala, 57, a retired longshoreman, is accused of hurling an ashtray at his wife Blanche's head during a Nov. 26 argument in their New Dorp Beach home after he returned from Staten Island University Hospital after a few days there, the sources said.

The 59-year-old woman died the next day, and the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide due to blunt trauma to the head. Autopsy results found that the wound triggered the bleeding of a brain injury she had suffered during a Nov. 19 beating, sources said.

I was going to give a " You know, he probably didn't intend to hit her in the head." statement, but when the cause of death was aggravation of an injury sustained in a previous beating, yes, obviously he was trying to do some serious damage, and has had a history of doing it.

Usually i feel sorry for these kind of guys, and by this i mean a very specific subset of wife abusers, that while scum, end up killing their wife completely unintentionally. ( the show cops, especially in early episodes has quite a few of these guys. One of which actually may not have been in the wrong. His wife was attacking him with a knife, and he managed to land a kick that stopped her heart. While their actions are deplorable, and they deserved to be in jail already, i have no doubts that someone who slapped his wife, and then she died by cracking her head on a coffee table after a trip, didn't intend to kill her. )

But this guy, not so much. He seems like the final step in the wife abuser chain " Don't care if she dies, don't care if she lives, literally"

Gotta love journalist taking license to make a story sound more gripping. The real story is they got into an argument related to the cable subscriptions not being updated and in his state of anger he idiotically threw an ashtray at her head.

Reading the quoted portion gives the impression it went as follows, "where's my premium Chanel's woman!! I'm sorry honey. I didn't pay for them!" *husband proceeds to murder wife* Not quite accurate but he needs to be punished severely regardless.

I doubt his intention was to take her life when throwing the ashtray, regardless if his reckless and abusive behavior was going to inevitably lead to her death. Yes, he is a coward and likely had the potential of cold bloodedly killing his wife but I don't think this was that moment of cold blooded murder.
