I wonder how much any such attempt would have mattered.

This kind of hoax seems like a "all-in" moment. Even if copping to a guilty plea would have reduced any criminal consequences for him, it's hard to imagine any situation where his reputation survives intact. May as well ride it to the bitter end.

Hell, he almost wriggled out of it.

I'd expect, if at some point he felt a suicide attempt would garner some sympathy, he'd be right there hanging himself with a roll of toilet paper in no time.
 
The first Smollett family member to say Jussie did it and feels sorry for it. Will save the family's name and careers.

My recollection is that the hoax was originally supposed to be a private affair, and the police were roped in by accident. I think that in the first week or so, there was probably plenty of opportunity for Smollett to go to the cops and withdraw his allegations. Have his agent or publicist put out some boilerplate "it was all a misunderstanding, my client is very sorry for the confusion and distress" and then just lie low for a couple months. And probably a period after that where he could have come clean and gotten a slap on the wrist.
 
Am I reading this correctly that the J-Smol is in the Cook County slam? Did they gen-pop him or is he getting the Country Club treatment?

Meh. His appeal, like all criminal conviction appeals, is almost certainly doomed. He's going to do his 150 days no matter how hard he tries to delay.

Can't really fault the decision of the judge. There's no point to an appeal if the process is going to take longer than the sentence is while the person is waiting in jail.
 
I wonder if J Smol is going to get one of those teardrop tats after his stay? Maybe start gay Tupac-ing about how he got 99 problems but MAGA ain't one?

Kim Foxx ruined it by offering him a sweetheart plea deal. Oh well. His career is still ruined, his reputation is still ruined, and he has spent years dealing with legal issues, paying for lawyers, and so on. Sometimes the process is the punishment.

I'm still questioning what the upside was. Why some people think that making up a fake hate crime with themselves as a victim is worth the risk? And if you ask the question that way, I think you have to concede that there is some sort of value for certain people in being perceived as a victim of racism or bigotry. Some sort of clout to be gained within certain social circles. Like the infamous Rolling Stone article called A Rape On Campus. I guess ultimately what they are seeking is attention. And attention can bring other benefits, including money and emotional validation.
