Jussie Smollet Trial

The Tribune endorsed Donna More, who split the main opposition vote, with Conway and More totaling up to more or less the same % that Foxx received. Perennial losing candidate, ex-alderman Bob Fioretti got 5% from his church, friends and relatives, I guess. Thanks for nothing, idiots.

ETA - looking at the final final numbers, I stand corrected. Foxx did get 50%.
But maybe if they would have coalesced behind Conway sooner, they might have had a change.

Candidate|% Vote
Kim Foxx|50.2
Bill Conway|31.4
Donna More|13.5
Bob Fioretti|5.0

Also, a republican named Patrick O'Brien won his primary handily in an election held on St. Patrick's Day.

Okay, that leads me, in my layman's opinion, to think that he must be mentally ill. No sane person could possibly make up a story that's that stupid in the context of his previous lie.

"In an Instagram video posted Wednesday morning, the former “Empire” actor claims he is on day 421 of quarantine."

WTF?

Dodging the media spotlight for over a year while your tragicomic court case makes its way through the system is not the same thing as "quarantine".

And, as with Julian Assange, self-isolation is not the same as serving a court-ordered sentence. If you want to incarcerate yourself while you wait for the government to incarcerate you, that's fine with me, but it doesn't count towards time served.

Nothing major but the MTG thread made me remember this guy so I looked him up. One of my favorite threads ever:

Evidentiary hearing in Jussie Smollett case scheduled in July

A Cook County judge Monday scheduled a July 14 evidentiary hearing looking into whether one of Jussie Smollett’s lawyers had contact with the two brothers who were allegedly paid by the former “Empire” star to stage a phony hate crime in 2019.

The most significant fact there is that the hearing, apparently a preliminary hearing about the conduct of a defense lawyer, will be three and a half years after the event. Covid is part of the problem, but it's still hard to see a minor case dragging on for years.

Is it a minor case because a couple of Trump supporters beating up a black, gay actor, dousing him with bleach, and putting a noose around his neck is a big ol' bowel of nothing so lying about something like this isn't all that important either?

Or is because hoax hate crimes are so common that we don't need to take them seriously?

Smollett is scheduled to go to trial next month on multiple felony counts. That's not minor. What seems minor is that a preliminary hearing is being held next July about whether a defense lawyer had improper contact with the two men who allegedly helped stage the hoax. Seems like that's something to resolve before the trial of the primary case.

Clearly the prosecution is going to call the brothers.

They can not say they weren't part of it, if they do they will open themselves to perjury charges. I'm sure they have texts, emails, plane tix etc... implicating them in the 'assault'.

The charge of felony disorderly conduct is basically the equivalent (In Illinois) of making a fake 911 call. From: https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/fulltext.asp?DocName=072000050K26-1

26-1(a)(4)
...
(a) A person commits disorderly conduct when he or she knowingly:
...
(6) Calls the number "911" or transmits or causes to be transmitted in any manner to a public safety agency for the purpose of making or transmitting a false alarm or complaint and reporting information when, at the time the call or transmission is made, the person knows there is no reasonable ground for making the call or transmission and further knows that the call or transmission could result in the emergency response of any public safety agency;
...
A violation of subsection (a)(2), (a)(3.5), (a)(4), (a)(6), (a)(7), or (a)(9) of this Section is a Class 4 felony.

I really don't see how he can argue this.

His only hope is to get a sympathetic jury.

I really enjoyed reading the first 20+ pages of Part 1 of this thread. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Yeah, i had forgotten about this. There was some good comedy.

FMW puts on an impressive display of the motte-and-bailey technique, and manages to escape the thread without having to admit to being wrong (towards the end, after it became clear that Smollet's story had more holes than the chase scene in The Last Jedi, he even tries on "I secretly suspected it was a hoax all along").
