please wildly speculate as to why.....

edit.

oh, it appears due to his wife's health

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (CNN) -- John Edwards will suspend his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination to help deal with his wife's recurrence of breast cancer, the Web site Politico.com reported Thursday.

The Web site, citing a friend of the Edwards, said the candidate may drop out of the race completely.

Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, who was treated for breast cancer in 2004, have scheduled a news conference for Thursday.

Elizabeth Edwards underwent treatment for breast cancer after the 2004 campaign, in which her husband was the Democratic vice presidential nominee.

is that going to affect anything much? Is it still looking like a two horse race for the dem nomination over there?

His wife went in yesterday for a follow-up exam for breast cancer.

The obvious guess is that she's sick again.

Well, since he has the ability to talk to the dead, perhaps a spirit in another dimension told him that he would lose the election, so he decided to get out now to avoid the embarassment.

UGH...

I hope things work out...I am not optimestic here though...Cancer that hangs around like that is not a good sign at all...

Not so fast...
Speaking from his home state of North Carolina, Edwards said he would not put his presidential aspirations on hold while his wife undergoes treatment for the disease.

"[N]ot curable, but treatable." I am hopeful too.

I predict that Ann Coulter will find a way to get publicity for herself out of this.

If he's not suspending his campaign I question the need for a press conference. If nothing's changing then the only thing it would be used for is to announce his wife is sick again. I may be coming across as a cynical <rule 8>-hole, but that just sounds like he's trying to play for sympathy.

I'm sure Edwards is quite aware of the sympathy angle, but I would bet a dollar to a donut that continuing his campaign is his wife's idea. She probably thinks that in addition to helping his chances, she may do something positive for cancer awareness and treatment. Manipulative bitch.

Too little information, too much speculation. Her treatment might involve one chemo session every couple of weeks, or it could mean radical surgery and hospitalization and daily chemo and radiation. She may be able to carry on okay, or she may be utterly wiped out by the experience. Her prognosis may be grim, or it may be good. None of us here know.

I had seven months of chemo 20+ years ago (weekly sessions for two weeks, three week break, then different biweekly sessions for a month, rinse, lather, repeat). I missed maybe eight or ten days of work in that period, and my wife didn't have to take any time off to take care of me.

I don't have any love for Edwards, but I don't think anyone here has any business judging his decision.

I had 18 months too, also 20+ years ago, so I have sympathy for her and the whole family. But like I said, that was my cynicism coming out.

Now, if it was Gingrich's wife, there'd be a nasty surprise in the recovery room... :D

Pausing his campaign was an easy decision. It wasn't going anywhere. Obama took his mantle as the young looking charismatic candidate.

Well, let me just say I'm glad you and BPSCG are here...alive and posting.

Ain't science grand? :D
My mom's a big fan of Prevention magazine, basically a woo health magazine that says you can cure or prevent almost any disease if you eat right. Any time I get sick or even get injured, she's right there with, "Did you know if you mix honey and vinegar in a glass and drink it..."

Funny, when I had that swelling on my neck, she shut up with all that crap.

I would imagine they're going to hit it pretty hard. This is exactly the same kind of cancer my mom had. She was first diagnosed in 1992 and her prognosis was pretty grim (chance of surviving for more than three years was less than 50%). She, like Elizabeth Edwards had recurrences. She lived for twelve years after diagnosis, mostly because of her attitude and her strict obedience to doctors' advice. But once it gets in the bone though, it is not considered curable, only treatable.

But in regards to what I said about it being Elizabeth Edwards' decision, CNN echos that.
Elizabeth Edwards played a key role in convincing her husband to continue his campaign, a source close to both John and Elizabeth Edwards told CNN's Candy Crowley.
"Elizabeth is not going to let him get out," the friend told Crowley before the Edwards' announcement.
Of course, such statements are hardly surprising. I am a big supporter of Edwards, but I am aware that he is a politician and virtually everything he does is calculated. That doesn't diminish him in my eyes.

I'm very glad you recovered and that you were able to do so without requiring family to miss work. For the families of cancer patients, life must go on. My cube-mate at work, Brett has a son that has got leukemia and is not expected to survive long, yet Brett still has to go to work. He misses a day or an afternoon every now and then, but is not taking extended leave. At least, not yet.

I don't have any love for Edwards, but I don't think anyone here has any business judging his decision.
When you're a politician, especially one running for national office, that just goes with the territory. As I recall, there was a great deal of speculation about Cheney's heart problems and whether or not he should run. Frankly I'm impressed with the way Edwards and his wife have handled this. Was it wrong to call a news conference to announce this? I say no. It's news, innit?

Andrew Sullivan reverses field so fast he should be trying out as a wide receiver for the Washington Redskins:

12:17 pm March 22: "Edwards Suspends Campaign":
He does it because his wife has a recurrence of cancer in some degree to be further explored. It is of a piece with his character to do this; and a simple testament that he has the right priorities and values to be a president of the United States.

Then, at 12:39: "Edwards Forges On":
So, despite earlier reports, Edwards will not suspend his campaign. Good for him...

The campaign should go on, as life goes on.
What was that about priorities and values?
