this rocks....

He was a rebel in a rebel's world, though. Johnny Ramone was a fiercely Republican-voting, NRA-supporting musician in a milieu that is remarkable for its embrace of all things left.

Johnny went worldwide public with his partisanship in 2002, when the Ramones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At the microphone to give props to the people who made it all possible, he offered his own version of a Michael Moore moment.

"God bless President Bush, and God bless America," he said, clad in his trademark T-shirt, ripped blue jeans and leather jacket.

"I said that to counter those other speeches at the other awards," Mr. Ramone says in a phone interview. "Republicans let this happen over and over, and there is never anyone to stick up for them. They spend too much time defending themselves."

Joey was the left wing pinko commie.

Together, they created Bonzo Goes to Bittburg.

Go figure.

this is an excellent point about liberals :

"It was in 1960, the Nixon-Kennedy election," he says, recalling his first inclination toward the right. He was an only child of Irish heritage in a working-class neighborhood. Families on his block voted left, pro-union. "People around me were saying, 'Oh, Kennedy's so handsome,' and I thought, 'Well, if these people are going to vote for someone based on how he looks, I don't want to be party to that.' "

Ive noticed on many many occassions, that most liberals are very concerned/fooled with issues of popularity...outward appearances....like highschool...

also VERY concerned with controlling the way people think instead of leaving that to themselves to decide....

Being the self-proclaimed Ramones expert here (the greatest rock and roll band of all time), let me state the following:
Johnny was one of the great guitarists of all time, and definitely the fastest.
His political views are as deep as the John Holmstrom cartoons on their early albums.
He is not the sharpest tool in the shed.
He will definitely wrap up the Republican punk rock vote (all two of them).
He should actively campaign for Bush. He and Bush should make many joint appearances.

Joey Ramone's last album "Don't Worry About Me" done while he was dying of cancer, is one of the most inspirational works of our day, and should have won the Grammy. Includes a touching version of "What a Wonderful World" (remember he knew he was dying).
Did I mention that the Ramones were the greatest r-n-r band of all time? 2263 live performances. Do the math.

Johnny's quote about Kennedy's looks betrays the shallowness of his analysis. Just because people said he looked good doesn't mean they voted for him because of that.
Just like NTW reaching the above conclusion.

I'd like to interrupt this pleasant discussion to point out that the film MC5: A True Testimonial (being a documentary about some of the godfathers of the Ramones) will be showing in Cambridge Mass through Sunday. Wayne Kramer provides a somewhat different political view than Johnny Ramone.

He may also be a faster guitarist, but I'll defer to SG on this point.

Ya goin'?

(P.S. Johnny's not only fast but only strums on the downstroke.
A great guitarist does not a political analyst make.)

Pbht. He doesn't hold a candle to Tony Rice. Or Clarence White, for that matter.

Got that projection thing down to a science.

If you stop telling lies about me, I'll stop telling the truth about you.

Sort of like the anti-choice/anti-woman child molestors of the republican religious right wanting to control the way people think on abortion.

Moron.

In speed or quality?
And hey, I was just trying to be kind to the old boy.
Certainly not a virtuoso, but a master at rock minimalism.

Love how the interviewer refers to him as "Mr. Ramone."
Like the critic who referred to Meat Loaf as "Mr. Loaf."

Wow, some people thought Kennedy was handsome. How shallow.

No where near as deep as finding significance that a famous punk guitarist is a Republican.

I’m still waiting to hear Vanilla Ice’s political views so I will know how to vote in the next election.

I' pretty sure there's a law somewhere that says that Vanilla Ice is too dumb to be allowed to vote...no, really, I'm pretty sure it exists....part of the Patriot Act or something...trust me on this.

the point is that he was very young and noticed something wrong with people voting for someone based on looks and that was how he began to think the way he does.

its not supposed to be a grand political revelation.....

goons !
