At least according to the Vietnamese. Seems like they may only have used enhanced interrogations and stress positions. I suppose they thought they might get some useful information out of him that could help them prevent a bombing and maybe save innocent lives, so you got to think it was probably completely justifiable -- NOT.

Seriously, I wonder what Mr. McCain thinks about this. It has been one of his glories that he has stood up against the use of torture by the U.S. Sadly, our president doesn't sound all that different in explaining what we've been up to than does the Vietnamese Guard.

We should have his courage to not only call it what it is in this country, but we should prosecute those who have engaged in it or authorized it because they commited a crime.

Goodness, gracious, now we're going to see somebody Swiftboating McCain?

I hope not of me. I'm no fan of McCain, but he was tortured and is a hero. I posted because the explaination by the Vietnamese holds about as much water as does Bush's justification of torture, er, enhanced interogation.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty obvious that it was the Vietnamese making this claim, not the Democrats. There is little doubt that McCain underwent what would be called torture in almost any dictionary. Almost.

Total crap. If the OBama campaign has any brains, they will not go down this road..

I don't think Obama would go near this...

I didn't post it because I thought some nut in the U.S. would use it against McCain. Obama has always stated his high regard for McCain's service and the torture he experienced at the hands of the North Vietnamese.

I posted this, ultimately, not because it has any poltical implication for this country...it isn't a swift-boat sort of attack at all. Actually, I posted it because I was intregued by the Orwellian lengths that Mr. Tran goes through to justify that what they did to McCain and other American was not torture.

To the extent that there are any political ramifications, IMO, in this piece, it is that our Administration has to go through all kinds of contortions and super-legal reasons and methodologies to allow Bush to claim that we don't torutre.

To his credit, of course, McCain has long condemned torture by the U.S. -- even if, of late, he is willing to allow other Constitutional and legal protections (like Habeus) be legislated away. But, overall, McCain has been brave on this issue and more power to him...as a victim he can speak clearly about what toruture is and isn't and why.

I've also heard people claiming Obama is the Manchurian Candidate, brainwashed by the Muslim school he attended in the Philippines. No, he didn't and isn't but it's out there on both sides.

On the torture issue, I think Jeremiah Denton sort of broke the story about that one:

Note particularly the odd way he blinks his eyes, explained about 2 minutes into the video.

Strange the Vietnam War protesters were silent about the treatment of American POW's at the time and still to this day. Many of them were too busy calling returning veterans 'baby killers" to bother with whether the North Vietnamese actively practised wholesale torture and near starvation conditions in their prisons.

The Iraq War protesters condemned GITMO where some detainees complained that they were getting too fat!

.
He won't but three things will happen.

Obama will, at every opportunity, refer to McCain as something along the lines as hero, honorable, dedicated servant to his country etc.

Some nut cases will bring this issue up, however, in an attempt to smear McCain

McCain supporters will claim Obama agrees with the nut cases and demand non stop condemnation from him of them. When his response isn't good enough for them (it never will be), they will claim it's proof Obama really agrees with the nut cases.

Take it to the bank.
