Jogging Skeptically

For those of us who are serious about jogging, being on vacation in Las Vegas is no excuse to slack off for a week. Last year, at TAM8, I saw a few people besides me get up early to go jogging around the South Point hotel, and this year I want to offer up the opportunity to get out there as an organized group. It's always more fun and motivating to run with other people than it is to go running alone.

Breakfast starts at 7:30AM and the events start at 8 or 9, so I'll be getting up at 5:30AM to go jogging at 6, which will give me plenty of time to take nice, leisurely 5k (3.1 miles) around the hotel before the day starts getting too hot, have a shower, and be ready for the day's events. Anyone is welcome to join me for part or all of the run.

What you need to know

I cannot stress this enough: BRING WATER. It is very hot and very dry in Las Vegas, and you will lose a lot of water without realizing it. Your sweat will evaporate quickly and it will be easy to become dehydrated.

We'll be meeting outside the South Point Hotel and Casino at the front entrance, between the reception desk and the coffee shop, on Thursday the 14th through Sunday the 17th at 6AM. I'll be the guy dressed like I'm about to go jogging, you can't miss me. Please do not crowd around the entrance, let other people in and out.

We'll be taking a few minutes to stretch beforehand. I am not a physical trainer and I am not qualified to offer advice about how to train properly or safely, but you are welcome to follow my lead.

I will be running for 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) in a horseshoe path back and forth around the hotel. Each leg is about 1.1 miles. You are welcome to follow me for as much of the run as you like. I will have a running app on my iPhone and will be calling out the mile markers for those who only want to run one or two miles.

I plan to take a leisurely jog at about 9'30"/mile, which should take about 30 minutes. This is to be as inclusive as possible, for serious and casual runners.

Are you running around the hotel? As in inside the hotel, weaving in-between the slot machines?

Last year I paid for a gym pass for a couple of days... often I do use TAM as an opportunity to slack off on my exercise :-)

Man!
I feel cheated.

I was hoping for some take on some odd style of jogging, or some new and upcoming style of jogging that needed a good Randi-esque busting.

But no. I get advert, bascially.

We'll be running two or three times while there, but we tend to head out at about 5:00am so we can get in 6-10 miles before the sun starts to poke up.

I remember once waving to Toby as we passed by the bar.

Sounds fun, I'll be there for Thursdays run at least.

Right. I really think one of us has to reassess their definition of fun.

I don't mind a little light BDSM, but I don't want to get up at 5 am to do it...

If I find the time, I'll probably cough up $15 to use the hotel gym to do my weekly 5K. I've never run on a treadmill, is there anything I should know?
