Jimmy Carter

I often wonder how his presidency would be viewed if the hostage rescue attempt had succeeded. Sure, there was still that cloud over the campaign, but he could beat his chest about it.

Especially given the accusations of being militarily weak, it would be a great accomplishment. It was a bold move, too bad it failed.

The failure hurt him more than if it had never been attempted. Poorly planned, unlikely to succeed, eight soldiers dead, hardened attitudes in Iran. He did look inept and desperate.

A portrait of Carter's post-White House years.
Carter is the only president in the modern era to return full-time to the house he lived in before he entered politics — a two-bedroom rancher assessed at $167,000, less than the value of the armored Secret Service vehicles parked outside.
....
Carter costs U.S. taxpayers less than any other ex-president, according to the General Services Administration, with a total bill for him in the current fiscal year of $456,000, covering pensions, an office, staff and other expenses. That’s less than half the $952,000 budgeted for George H.W. Bush; the three other living ex-presidents — Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama — cost taxpayers more than $1 million each per year.

Carter doesn’t even have federal retirement health benefits because he worked for the government for four years — less than the five years needed to qualify, according to the GSA. He says he receives health benefits through Emory University, where he has taught for 36 years.

I was too young to appreciate much of anything of the events of his presidency, but from what little I know of his life, he seems to be a person of humility, decency and integrity.

I knew Carter was president, but I was too young to know much about him or his presidency as well. I do remember Reagan's presidency because his domestic policies destroyed my family's financial security and rendered us homeless. But then, that is what Republicans do. They destroy things.

To think he was defeated by an ******* like Reagan, largely because the latter was the better showman. We need more Jimmy Carters in politics, and fewer circus entertainers with no empathy.

Unfortunately, most voters are too stupid to know this or care. That's partly how Trump got into office, that and the gerrymandering of the USA to :rule10 by the Republicans.

Yeah and Reagan trashed him over the hostage crisis, too. The same way as trump would do nowadays.

What I remember vividly is, briefly living in Rockland County and taking an early evening commuter train home from New York City. I used to sit in the bar car and it was filled with Wall Street traders. They were obviously unwinding and they held long, loud conversations with one another. It was like a pub atmosphere. And how they trashed Carter! I was astonished at first. They considered him a total joke, completely inept, complete with over-the-top imitations of him.

I voted for him twice and considered him to be a very good President.

Republicans do for Wall Street and the fat cats, while Democrats like Carter tried to do for everyone. That's why you heard such talk.

I met him several times and worked beside him on a Habitat for Humanity project. He was self-effacing, more skillful with tools than many of us, and gently refused to discuss the then-current Republican President. He was about my height then, about 5' 9".

Jimmy Carter was a class act and a good and decent person. He was one of the most honorable men to occupy the White House in the last 80 years. I would have voted for Ford in '76 and Reagan in '80 over Carter, but Carter did a lot of good things, such as sweeping deregulation, the Camp David Accords, appointing Paul Volker to run the Federal Reserve, and pushing for a huge increase in defense spending after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan.

I would take Carter over just about any major Democrat today. He would be a vast improvement over Biden, Hillary, Kamala Harris, Liz Warren, Pelosi, etc.

All these tributes and accolades are very nice, but he's not dead yet. I don't know exactly what his medical condition is or how long he has left, but going into hospice care doesn't mean he's going to die this week. He might, but then again he might be around a while.

My father-in-law went into hospice care in a nursing home/rehab center; the doctors said he probably had only a few days to live. Instead, six weeks later, he was able to walk out of there and go home! Two years later, he went into home hospice care. He was bedridden, but he lived another three months before he passed quietly in his sleep at age 81.

So say nice things about Jimmy, but it might be a while before he dies. Or it might not.

One of my high school history teachers (one of my favorite teachers) once offered his personal opinion that Carter was a good president, but a lousy politician, whereas Reagan had been a poor president but a great politician.

Well, I could use a national holiday soon.

And when Trump dies, everyone should get a paid two week vacation to celebrate.

I remember when Regan died; the customer who told me was not a fan, and I paid for his beer so we could celebrate the death of a disgusting piece of ****
