Merged Jim Callahan's MDC claim

If I can accomplish what is laid out in my challenge it would by Randi's admition be proof.

No, it wouldn't. If you can do what you claim, it would mean no scientific explanation is able to be put forth at that time. It would say nothing whatsoever about the truth or falsehood of your claims. Hopefully the next three days will give you a chance to contemplate this very important distinction.

One need not be a forum member to submit a challenge. My take is that while some of the deluded can occasionally be helped with a protocol here, most get derailed and lost. The dishonest tend to get lost very, very quickly....

He is now Jim-Callalan as per this post http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=289315&forum=251&172&start=170.

Jim started posting on Feb 2006 at the same time as J ack stopped posting. I do note that he implies that he is going to apply for the challenge back in Feb 2005 in the thread.

That said I do hope to be able to increase the challenges and guarantees to at least $1,000,000.00 over the next couple of years with the help of the self proclaimed Amazing Randi and the JREF.

As mod this time: This isn't the place to discuss issues with other boards.

This is from Magic Cafe but as I wrote it I think it's relevant, also it isn't an "issue".

Three years ago I offered this challenge to Jim-from robo's link.

Jim,

I read the page again to be sure I had mentioned the reference to Randi's remote viewing challenge.
I did.

This is just taking up that challenge.

I will name or describe the contents of the box or locker.

The success of the test should be self evident.
If I am correct I get the cash if not they take mine.

Heck they can take mine either way.
I believe it is quite simple.

Thanks for writing

Needless to say I'm still waiting.

Doh!

Well, the upside is that Jim might use the time to come up with some better ways to duck really simple questions.

Is it just me or does it seem like he pushed and pushed to deliberately get suspended to avoid the issue? To reiterate, here is the exchange where Jim says he will take the MDC:
No, you're still trying to control it. Can you submit to testing under controlled conditions without throwing up any more red herrings? Will you apply for the MDC?

A simple YES or NO will suffice.

YES and it will be worthwhile to continue the discussion.

NO and you are a spent force not worth bothering with (assuming you were a force to begin with).
Yes

Now there is an interesting answer I say.

J im

H.O.A-X

Pretty straightforward.

The only thing you'll see Randi run from, is stupidity. He learned a long time ago, you can't fix stupid.

I say forget Jim,he is a legend in his own lunchtime nothing more.A magician nothing more.
His only purpose it seems is to just be annoying.

Should have said "will."

Folks, Jim has been playing this game for years. He'll say just enough to provoke a response without making (or rarely making) an explicit claim. IMHO he doesn't believe that he has supernatural abilities, but, like Geller, he's trying to get people interested in what he's doing. If you click on the thread mentioned a few posts up, #394, you'll see an exchange Jim and I had in 2005 (same user name) regarding his $25,000 challenge. If you search at the Café for words like "psychic" and "Randi" and "Geller" etc. you'll find many long and maddening threads where Jim will imply supernatural abilities, but when pressed for details, will respond cryptically.

If Jim wants to take the MDC he knows how to apply. But seeing as he likely doesn't have any paranormal ability he won't. What he will do is make provocatively vague posts which will rile up skeptics into engaging in a pointless exchange.

Everyone's free to do what they wish, but I think our time could be better spent with people who sincerely want to take the challenge.

I did say WILL to the "Will you apply for the MDC" question. He also answered YES to that one. He's on the hook for it no matter how he wants to rewrite history.

I have no illusions that he will ever submit to testing. It's just fun to bait him. If he would sincerely engage in discussion and testing, then there wouldn't be any more need to bait him. I'm not holding my breath on that either.

Yes, Jim likes to play games for attention. I think he is closet skeptic. He has to know this is all BS, especially since he can only work his magic tricks under conditions where he controls the variables. Other than the fraud and immaturity, he is essentially one of us.

I suggest we treat him as a entertainer. Criticize him for not making that clear on his website. Plus for using the term paranormalist or whatever he uses. Plus for not making it clear he will not apply for the MDC.

I think Jim has learning difficulties. He obviously cannot spell, cannot engage in a discussion and seeks attention.
For some weird reason he thinks he is creating "art" by annoying people on forums.Considers himself "most controversial".Hell if annoying people on skeptic forums makes you that,I must be too;having been banned from every paranormal forum there is!
Oh and as a footnote,he hates being challnged(see:Criss Angel,James Randi)as it exposes his character flaw:-
He is useless. :D

I agree with Jimtron, let's move on and leave him to the fawning on Magic Cafe.

I agree. It's fun to poke Jim for about 20 minutes and watch him hiss and bubble - after that, it's pretty boring. He's always going to react the same way.

Magic Cafe can have him.

I have offered over at The Magic Cafe to assist Jim by drafting a protocol based on his Phenomenon appearance, his challenge to Randi/the JREF, and the official JREF rules. I haven't checked it since earlier this morning, but I'm still waiting for a response.

Cheers,

Chris

I'd be willing to bet a large sum of money that the conversation will go much like The Professor's MDC protocol discussion: nowhere slow. Lots of vagueness and calling the MDC unfair etc.

However, I would love to be proved wrong by Jim; I sincerely wish he and The Professor would come up with a testable claim and apply and follow through. But if the last four years of reading Jim's posts are any guide, it ain't gonna happen.

Either Jim sincerely doesn't understand why his performances are not proof of paranormal powers, or he is intentionally being misleading. Either way, I have seen zero indication that he will make a testable claim and follow through with it. But as I said, I'd love to proven wrong.

A protocol should be simple. Just let him do what he did on Phenomenon, with a slight difference. While he is located in a place where he cannot see the box, have someone go shopping, buy any single thing he or she wants to buy, and place that thing into the box. That way, there is no "select from these pre-determined objects". It would be truly random, as the person could decide on pretty much anything that would fit into the box, and the box could be any arbitrary size, including the size of a warehouse, so that the object purchased (or even rented, for an expensive item) could be placed within the walls of the enclosure. Then, all he has to do is describe the object contained within the containment area.
