I'm trying to understand what Jesse means when he says Obama's statements on faith-based thingamabobs are "talking down to black people." Any insights?

I think he's upset that Obama is making speechs in predominately black settings (i.e., black churches) stating that young black fathers have to start being fathers. Taking responsibility. Similar to Crosby's line. Jesse is more into blaming white society.

It was funny watching Al Sharpton try to explain to Hannity why Jesse Jackson doesn't deserve the same treatment Imus got. Sharpton's response was that Imus knew what he was saying was public while Jackson thought it was a private conversation.

So in the end, Sharpton is saying Jackson is just a complete idiot.

Let's see: wearing a microphone. Camera pointed at him. Sitting in a television studio.

That says "private conversation" to me!

(And I do understand it was during a commercial but nonetheless...)

I met Jesse once, in 1986...my impression was total sleaze ball. He has done exactly nothing since then to change that opinion.

Sometimes the media cracks me up. Here CNN says that Jackson said he was being taking out of context.

First, from the above interview link, Jackson did not say he was taken out of context (though he said his remark was a regrettable 'sound clip').

And second, even if the media, or someone defending the remark, thought it was taken out of context, in what possible context would it have been appropriate?

Also, the Rocky Mountain News apparently feels it is inappropriate to say the word "nuts" in print.

So they replaced it with the more genteel "testicles".

Well, so far, he has been taken out of context, insofar as I've not heard the context in which Jackson made those comments. What exactly does Jackson think Obama has been talking down to black people on? "faith based" what?

That Jackson apologized says that he knew it bad. He owned up to it. Good for him.

But I would still be interested in knowing the context in which it was said.
