The actual maximum speed at which a lightning is known to have flown at, remains classified, a few friends of mine are ex forces, including one who's ex RAF who served with a lightning squadron. So whilst you are right, officially, the Lightning, is known to have been capable of mach 2, it remains classified as to what its maximum capabilities were (hence the contension).
A Handley Page victor broke the sound barrier during testing stages, but that aircraft was never rated as a supersonic bomber (admittedly it had begun a dive before breaking the sound barrier)
it also remains classified as to what the maximum speed an SR71 was capable of, but they were amazing machines aswell.
But yeah, the Lightnings drank fuel faster than Oliver Reed could drink beer... And aswell as fuel pods on top of the wings, sometimes they mounted rocket pods, and missiles on top of them aswell...
