The programme in question was repeated last night, as it happens. The nutritionist wasn't just some muesli-fuelled wonk but the paediatric nutritionist from the local hospital, and indeed the kids he was seeing were in a life-threatening condition in hospital. He had scans of an eight year old with a severely impacted small intestine to support his claims. I wish I'd taped it so I could transcribe what he actually said, to see if it seemed reasonable. It sounded so to me, but I ain't an expert.

Yes, it is possible. I just don't think it's at all common, and as a legitimate bogeyman to scare parents away from unsuitable diets I think it's a bit OTT. I'd very much like to know what the actual cause was thought to be in the children in question - I suspect this was more than just a bad diet, there was probably some individual predisposing cause.

Hard to say if this thread is for real given the OP. Wouldn't be a poster with a fetish for coprolalia I hope?

Its for real. It was a claim made in a program called Jamie's School Dinners where a well known TV chef tries to get kids interested in eating "real" food instead of reheated, highly processed prepackaged stuff for school meals.

He has had some measure of success, in that the government has been so embarrassed by the publicity that it has increased funding for school meals in England (up to 50p a day, 60p in secondary school).
