James Burke's Connections series is available here for download or online viewing -Those of a certain age from the UK ( I would have been about 15) will remember this seminal 70s series.

They ran for years here in the states as well. I one of the Connections companion books (3 or 4 IIRC). Good stuff, and I'll never think of a Gin and Tonic in the same way again.

I Got His book "Circles", which is nice re-work of some of his connections stories into circles, kind of.

Thank you! I love his voice and manner of speaking and was sad to see he lost it in the other Connections series.

James Burke also ran a Connections column in SciAm for years, always the first thing I turned to after the 50 Years Ago ... page. I was born in '54, so James Burke was, for me, an avatar of the Space Age (remember that?). Sorely missed.

He died?

He's still around -

February 18, 2007 - A note from James concerning the official publishing dates for a couple of his books:
"The publishing dates for the two books is now fixed as July 4th."
a) for an updated re-issue of' 'Connections' (this time, by Simon and Schuster) and
b) the new book, 'American Connections: The Founding Fathers. Networked.'

Connections is a wonderful series. Burke is brilliant in it. Connections 2 wasn't too bad either, but it didn't have the same charm as the original.

If you get a chance try to see one of his series called, if memory serves me right, "The Real Thing" - produced I think just after Connections and was about the brain and how we perceive the world. Some of the science in it is probably outdated but at the time it was the most thought provoking TV show I'd seen.

The Day the Universe Changed is available at the same site:

That is an excellent series. I can't recommend it highly enough. The same goes for the book which I've read at least three times. The way he distilled all of human rational thinking down into 7 or 8 "moments" when the way we think about the world changed forever is brilliant.

ETA: Just thought I should point out that on that clickcaster site, the episodes appear in reverse order, so if you want to watch them in their proper order you should start at the bottom of the page and work your way up.

I'd forgotten about this series and how enjoyable it was to watch - in the 70s. Yikes! But thank you very much.

So nice to see the TV series and James Burke's name again. Also thanks to others for the up-to-date info on him.

I second that. I thought he'd retired years ago, and at my age you kind of assume that authority figures from your teen-years are gone by now. I like the sound of American Connections.
