J. Edgar Hoover planned mass jailings in 1950

Not too terrifying is it. Oh, but I'm just a hysterical conspiracy theorist, I forgot. It's not so bad. If you're not a bad guy you have nothing to be concerned about. Trust us, the leaders know who the bad guys are. I will bet my right testicle (though I have not read down) there are apologist for this and people who will rationalize this. Every country needs those who toe the line. The funny thing is, there is absolutely nothing the government could do for which you will not find some apologist. And, of course, if someone brings up the obvious parallels to fascism you are automatically labeled a tin foil hat wearer. I guess everyone has to play their part.

While an interesting story, doesn't this post belong in History?

Lisa?

J Edgar Hoover has been dead for decades.

The problem with dead politicians and functionaries, is that they get to haunt us for years after their deaths.

Take Nixon's useless "war on drugs".

Who knows what your grandchildren will be dealing with from the fallout of Bush and his minions ....

The President's [Nixon] extraordinary year encompassed four major areas of activity:
Momentum Lost. But when a second wave of some 50,000 demonstrators vowed to "stop the Government." Washington police, federal troops and the Justice Department got tough. Carrying out mass arrests, most of them illegal, they pushed some 12,000 protesters into buses and locked them up. Most were soon released for lack of evidence or improper arrest procedures, but the Government still functioned and the movement's momentum was lost, perhaps permanently.

Judge Orders Demonstrators Freed - Jurist Holds City in Contempt of Court, Saying Dozens of People Were Held Without Charges
NEW YORK, Sept. 2 -- A criminal court judge ordered the release of hundreds of Bush protesters Thursday, ruling that police held them illegally without charges for more than 40 hours. As the protesters began trickling out of jail, they spoke of being held without access to lawyers, initially in a holding cell that had oil and grease spread across the floor.

Several dozen of those detained said that they had not taken part in protests. Police apparently swept up the CEO of a puppet theater as he and a friend walked out of the subway to celebrate his birthday. Two middle-age women who had been shopping at the Gap were handcuffed, and a young woman was arrested as she returned from her job at a New York publishing house.

Hours before President Bush made his speech to the Republican National Convention, Manhattan Criminal Court Judge John Cataldo held city officials in contempt of court for failing to release more than 500 detained demonstrators by 5 p.m. The judge said that the detentions violated state law, and he threatened to impose a fine of $1,000 per day for each person kept in custody longer than 24 hours without being arraigned.

As of Thursday evening, about 168 people still in detention had been held for more than 24 hours. ...

...In all, police arrested more than 1,700 people, or nearly three times as many as were arrested in Chicago at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, which had far more violence. Police have used large orange nets and riot and motorbike squads to sweep up dozens of alleged protesters.

Is This Really Happening? Mass Arrests of Muslim and Jewish Immigrants in America
The INS in Los Angeles, California and in other states, detained hundreds of Middle-Eastern Muslim and Jewish men and boys yesterday. These are the people who came forward to the INS' call to register. And their hands were handcuffed with a thank you note. Is it the anticipated Christmas gift from the Santa?

An unconfirmed report says that more than 2500 people were arrested in the last few days. INS has flatly denied revealing the number of people in custody. INS spokesman Mr. Arcauate said that those men detained yesterday had violated the immigration laws. He sited example of overstaying visa, wanted for crimes, etc. If these are the reasons, why does the INS not arrest millions of illegal Mexicans or other foreign nationals who constitute the majority of illegal immigration problem in America? When Bush strongly denies that America is not against the peaceful minority immigrants or their faith, does the selective apprehension of Muslims and Jews conform to the President's wishes?
I believe that round up occurred across the country and involved 10s of thousands of Arab men. Sure, there were 19-20 hijackers. But is arresting thousands the only way to assure you get a handful of extremists out of the country? Seems more like something a very incompetent ignorant leadership would do. Create ten times more terrorists than you arrest would seem a plausible result of arresting so many innocent people.

But I digress....

When the arrests are for political reasons and not true threats, that's where we have a problem. The article on the Hoover plans claims there were Russian spies about. Really? So if you happen to be against the current administration whether it was the 1950s the 1970s or the 2000s then surely you must be a communist spy, communist anti-war riot instigator, or a terrorist.

Anybody read through to the end?

In September 1950, Congress passed and the president signed a law authorizing the detention of “dangerous radicals” if the president declared a national emergency. Truman did declare such an emergency in December 1950, after China entered the Korean War. But no known evidence suggests he or any other president approved any part of Hoover’s proposal.

I won't hold my breath waiting for somebody to condemn Truman.

I'll condemn Truman and any other president who trades constitutional rights for the appearance of more security. I do note the very last sentence says that no known evidence suggests Truman or any other president approved any part of Hoover's plan.

That fat fairy was a disgrace to the USA. Let him go down in history as one of America's worst people.

Yes, that fat fairy opposed wonderful FDR's plan to intern the evil Japs!

So let it be with Caesar.

I'd be curious to see that list. Calling someone a "fairy" because of their personal life is puerile.

It isn't just because of the dress up Hoover was suspected of enjoying. I imagine the comment had to do with the hypocrisy of playing dress up on the side AND condemning everyone else for their beliefs and political activity at the same time.

IIRC from the biographies of JE Hoover I've read, Truman is one of the few Presidents he did not get his way with.
