What?!

I just finished this book and it is a great read. I think people might be surprised at Roose's views of the students, Jerry Falwell, evangelicals and Liberty University.

He mentions Richard Dawkins telling Liberty students to leave Liberty and enroll in a real university, the debate between the Liberty professor and the Rational Response Squad, the death of Falwell, and it is interesting to see things from the inside on those events. For instance, he states that Liberty students understood very well that their champion got demolished in the debate. He expected that there would be some effect on life on campus but there wasn't and he felt that it was mainly the fact that Liberty students are just like any other student, too busy to sustain lengthy considerations of what the event meant to their lifes. They were more concerned with passing courses and writing exams.

Interestingly, he was the last person to get a written interview with Falwell before he died. In fact, he did such a good job of making the interview pass censorship that it was used in a memorial to Falwell after his death.

A very interesting and enlightening read.

From quyak's review, it sounds like Roose was there during a most serendipitous semester -at least from an authors standpoint.
