Dr. Ralph Stanley is a legend in Appalachia. (I've been to his museum, and it is amazing!) Dr. Stanley is obviously NOT a racist. His participation in "O Brother Where Art Thou", a strongly anti-racist movie, should be indicative of his position. But anyone who knows anything about the region knows that it has a lot of deeply entrenched racism. Poverty and poor education have a whole lot to do with this. Of course, saying that all people of Appalachia are racist is itself a bigoted remark. To say that racism is strong in Appalachia reflect awareness of reality.

Stanley's endorsement, while not likely to be the straw that breaks the camel's back, is important in some of those regions, which include parts of very closely contested Virginia and North Carolina, because he commands tremendous respect among the mountain people. Heck, they built a museum for him. If he sways even a small number of them to vote against a culture that is prevelant there, he could make a difference.

There's a poll I posted over on the "Poll Vault" thread that shows that Obama has higher support among whites than any Democrat running for president since Carter. I find that statistic to be absolutely stunning.

If McCain pulls a miraculous upset, it will not be because of racism.
