It's not natural, educating women.

And leave her social circles, upbringing, husband maybe?

If those things are that important to her, it's not likely she wants to be a priest, she could probably get by with being a nun.

Contrast that to the two year old girl who has that long engagement in front of her.

Hrm..

Maybe we should send rebecca, renata, Cleopatra, MoeFaux, and the rest of the skepchick elite to teach them respect and manners...

(yes, girls...whips are allowed..)

Should clear things up..

More seriously, any society that does not recognize universal sufferage is doomed to be third world nation. It's like a boxer who fights with the right side of his body paralyzed. It isn't because WE'LL make this happen....it just happens because the world works that way. Just my opinion.

this is what I can't grasp...how do you know she is making you suffer if you are ignoring her?

But back to the topic....I have a friend who told me he is going to fund his son to university but not his daughter.....why? This guy is a raving atheist....I've not asked because its none of my business but I imagine its a societal thing....is this attitude caused by an underlying religious influence or is it the other way around...is god created in our image and we have engineered our religions to justify our inherent attitudes towards females in society?

First, ;) ; because she is ignoring me. You must be a yuppie if you don't understand this.

Second, perhaps he can't afford to do both and has flipped a coin or made an otherwise judgemental decision, which you can't comment on because you think it's none of your business and haven't tried to find out? Perhaps your assumptions are just assumptions?

I have two daughters, no sons, and one has been more expensive than the other but I find it difficult to imagine gender would have made any difference. In this society that is. I know it would have in many others.

I have been looked at with what I think was either pity or incomprehesion when I said I had no problems with no sons, by educated people from Middle Eastern origins. Tradition is a hard load to carry sometimes. Unfortunately they don't know it's a load at all.

You are being unrealistically unsensitive to social realities. Is it late where you are too?

Eventually yes, but not necessarily in our lifetime.

I think you're right. That really adds a darwinian aspect to the idea of cultural evolution.

Wow, Renata, that's outrageous. I found this other story out of Pakistan too.

So the family of the man who slept with his wife has to give up a girl virgin as compensation. The only difference between this and slavery is a wedding vow.

Now now. We must not judge other's cultures. Every culture has equal validity. Your judgements are arbitrary and capricious. One person's desire to lord over another is an equally valid world view as the other person's desire to be free. Thus we have no way to claim slavery is wrong, philosophically.

It's good that modern Christians have evolved to interpret their holy texts in ways that don't discriminate against women. Let's hope that liberalism spreads to other faiths.

It's what I've been saying for years. The West has spend 200 years turning Christianity into just a harmless lifestyle choice. The same needs to happen to Islam, but no one here will see that in their lifetime.

Note: It will require giving the power hungry a different path to outrage the hoi polloi than religion. That is what fosters, for example, heavy-handed socialism with all its glorious anti-rich-person rhetoric, or racisim in the South of the US. Thus Islam will only lose its power as some secular quasi-religion like that takes hold in the minds of the population, at the behest of the power hungry.

Lets' instead start up a new god that rewards nothing except treating others as you would expect (hope) to be treated, and see what happens. Hell, we could even express the contempt that all the nonbelievers in our god deserve.

Happy to oblige.

The only requirement to reach My Inner Circle (tm) is to take a vow of Perpetual Inhibreation.

Also, you can have the virgins now.

As Robbin Williams once said.

"If you have every been with a virgin, you would say, "um. . .I don't know."

Besides, 72 virgins--it's fun for a while, and then what are you left with? 72 ex-girlfriends. For all eternity. Some paradise.

I don't get it.

Don't worry. It was a late post and too subtle even for me in daylight.

Point was that there are many Korans. Some are only worth flushing, others are not. The fanatics read one version which doesn't deserve respect. Others read another.

As to what is virginity or sex, we know that Clinton has certain views on that, which all others don't agree with.

;)

Gotcha. I don't know a lot about Islam. Just the highlights.
