...and if not, how come this? It seems that Russia just might be justified in shooting down U.S. planes carrying Georgian soldiers back to their country from Iraq. I think we would if Pakistani planes were flying alQeda into Afghanistan or Iraq.

US begins flying Georgian troops home from Iraq

By KIM GAMEL – 38 minutes ago

BAGHDAD (AP) — The U.S. military began flying 2,000 Georgian troops home from Iraq on Sunday, military officials said, after the Georgians recalled the soldiers following the outbreak of fighting with Russia in the breakaway province of South Ossetia.

The decision was a timely payback for the former Soviet republic that has been a staunch U.S. supporter and agreed to send troops to Iraq as part of the U.S.-led coalition.
Georgia was the third-largest contributor of coalition forces after the U.S. and Britain, and most of its troops were stationed near the Iranian border in southeastern Iraq.

The U.S. military has played down concerns about the redeployment, saying it may have "some impact" in the near term but no significant long-term effect on Iraq's security.

Will Bush manage to get us embroiled in the big one six months before we are supposed to see the last of him?

I really don't think the Russians will dare to shoot down a US military plane over Georgian territory.

My dad worked for the Soviet military-industrial complex, so...

If a Russian nuke lands in your back yard...

Don't worry, it's not gonna explode...

The rust might ruin your grass though...

:dewink:

I just heard late news that, in response to this, the Russians have bombed the runways at Gegorgia's airfields. I agree, better the runways then the U.S. aircraft...

Why would they bother to provoke the US in such a way? They're whipping the Georgians' ass anyway, so 2,000 Georgian soldiers more or less doesn't really matter.

Unless you're listening to Saakashvili. In his live interview with Wolf Blitzer earlier today, being asked about the performance of the Georgian army: "The Georgian troops are doing just fine. But the fighting needs to stop. People get killed! Ehhm, I mean, civilians get killed!"

I don't even have a clear grasp of what exactly is going on in this region, could anyone please unravel it for me? Is it just because South Ossetia wants to remain independent?

maybe we could fly them to another country and find another way of getting them in. Flying over Georgia with a few thousand soldiers hostile to Russia may be a big mistake.

I shared your confusion over what is such a big deal until somebody mentioned to me there is an oil pipeline traversing South Ossetia (which I never heard of until this past week)

Suddenly it all became clear.

We're already kind of embroiled in it. Georgia received its military training from the US as well as some of its equipment. It's shaping up to be as much of a proxy war as Afghanistan was.

An interesting prediction--I wonder if we'll wind up getting commiephobia all over again. Imagine how the Junior Woo Scouts will react when they see what a borderline police state really looks like. XD

To be honest, I have no idea how (un)reliable they are...

However, I do think its interesting to see how the stories are being delivered to a significant number of people close to the action

According to the 2008 Forbes tax misery index: In Russia, if I make a million Euros, I keep 870,000 - and that's with a lot of people to raise from poverty. In Denmark, if I make a million Euros, I keep 381,400.

NATO's yearly military expenditures: $850 billion. Russia's: $45 billion. As percent of GDP: Russia 4.58%, Georgia 15.90% (second only to North Korea, and actually much higher, since they're buying some stuff at deep discount and that data is a year old - it went up by like 30x over the past few years).

So.... Who are the commies again?

Yeah, sorry. I missed the tone of your post. Still relevant numbers though.
