Is there a point to all this "Israel vs Palestine" bickering?

Long time Politics-subforum lurker, first time Politics-subforum poster I mean to say that I don't post here often.

I just had to ask some questions after seeing the umpteenth thread about the latest Zionist evil deed/Hamas terrorist attack. Quite an unusually frequent posting of what is essentially the exact same thread, wouldn't you say? Even the 9/11 CT subforum isn't this bad. Okay, sure, each thread STARTS with a different news item, but by the second page, they all look identical: post after post arguing with absolute certainty that one side started it and is more evil, while the other side is just trying to defend itself and is not as evil. And of course there are the inevitable pseudo-concessions of "now I'm not condoning [my side]'s actions, but..." before going on to state with absolute certainty that the other side started it and is more evil.

So essentially, all Israel/Palestine threads inevitably degrade into the same two issues:

1) Who started it?
2) Who is more evil?

My personal views on these issues are as follows:

1) Who gives a damn?
2) Who gives a damn?

The first one reminds me of all the fights I used to have with my siblings back when my age was in the single digits. We would always end up breaking something and then Mom would come yell at us. And of course, we would try to defend ourselves, with the defense that has come to be a tireless classic for children all over the world:

"He started it!"
"Nuh-uh, HE started it!"

And then Mom would respond with "I don't care who started it! Just clean up this mess!"

So I read on as people go further and further back in history in an effort to discover which side "started it"...and I'm tempted to say the same thing. Does it really matter which side "started it"? It's not as if definitive proof one way or the other (even by stretching reality to the point where such proof would even be possible to obtain) would cause the side that "started it" to suddenly go "Wow, we were wrong all this time", apologize, throw down their weapons, and surrender their land. Maybe in Dream-Land...but here in reality, in the present, Israel exists, Jews live there, Arabs live there, and neither is in any hurry to leave.

Look, whichever side you're on, you both want the same thing, right? You both want peace. You want peace, you need to deal with the here and now. Should Israel have been created? Should there be Jews in Palestine? What does it matter in the face of the facts that Israel WAS created and there ARE Jews in Palestine and we can't just make any of that go away? "I don't care who started it! Just clean up this mess!"

Now for the second issue: "Which side is more evil?" Because that's really what you're all asking, right? All these threads about the latest Israeli evil deed/Hamas evil deed don't seem to have any clear goal or objective in mind, other than to determine who is "worse". Who killed more people? Who caused more destruction? Who caused more homelessness? Who cares?

What do I mean. Well, suppose, for the sake of argument, that there was some sort of absolute, objective measure of Evilness. You could divide a group's total Evilness by its population, thus obtaining "Per Capita Evilness" or "PCE". There are three possible outcomes of such a measurement: Israel has a higher PCE than Palestine, Palestine has a higher PCE than Israel, or Israel and Palestine have equal PCE values. Now, I have hypothetical questions to ask of each an every one of you, depending on which hypothetical result we were to hypothetically obtain:

Outcome #1:
You've proven that Israel is more evil than Palestine! Congratulations! Yay for you! ...So now what? Do you want some kinda medal?

Outcome #2: You've proven that Palestine is more evil than Israel! Congratulations! Yay for you! ...So now what? Do you want some kinda medal?

Outcome #3: What? You mean...Israel and Palestine are equally evil? Oh, well darn it all. I guess that means all this flame-warring was for nothing. Sucks to be you, eh?

Outcome #4: You decide to evade the point by poking holes in a hypothetical scenario that this poster freely admits could never actually happen.

Normally, when people argue fanatically in favor of something, they generally have some sort of goal in mind. But I can't think of anything that could possibly be accomplished by proving which side is more evil. To put it another way, if you presented the United Nations with the hypothetical PCE values of both Israel and Palestine, what exactly would you expect them to do with that information? Perhaps they could provide aid to the lesser of two evils? That's not exactly much of a peace plan. Maybe you do have some sort of goal in mind with all this bickering, but I certainly can't figure out what it is. From where I sit, this is all about as productive as two nerds flaming each other over who would win in a fight between Darth Vader and Spiderman. But I can't seem to find any threads about that.

Im sorry, could you point to some section where debates actually come to some sort of understanding and everybody hugs?

Not true but I suppose thinking that makes it easy for you to avoid the issue.

So essentially, all Israel/Palestine threads inevitably degrade into the same two issues:

1) Who started it?
2) Who is more evil?

My personal views on these issues are as follows:

1) Who gives a damn?

Anyone who cares about history. The Merneptah Stele allows us to go back to Amenhotep III. There is a slight lack of written records to isreal before that point.

2) Who gives a damn?

One of the ideas to come out of world war two was that you weren't meant to be evil.

The first one reminds me of all the fights I used to have with my siblings back when my age was in the single digits. We would always end up breaking something and then Mom would come yell at us. And of course, we would try to defend ourselves, with the defense that has come to be a tireless classic for children all over the world:

Various empires have tried this aproach from time to time. Unless you are prepared to back it up with a lot of killing it doesn't work. Generaly less effort to play the two sides off against each other.

Hurry isn't important. The Reconquista took over 700 years. If you are actualy interested in holding the land you are fighting over very long term conflicts become reasonable.

Look, whichever side you're on, you both want the same thing, right? You both want peace.

Questionable. It could be argued that the only difference between the two side's holy books is that the jews made up rather a lot of their history of violence.

You want peace, you need to deal with the here and now. Should Israel have been created? Should there be Jews in Palestine? What does it matter in the face of the facts that Israel WAS created and there ARE Jews in Palestine and we can't just make any of that go away?

It matters because it matters to people on the ground.

"I don't care who started it! Just clean up this mess!"

You are getting into white man's burden territory.

Now for the second issue: "Which side is more evil?" Because that's really what you're all asking, right? Broadly speaking anyone who worked out how to win a war in the 20th century (if it will work in the 21st remains to be seen). Victim status is important since countries are more likely to support countries they percive as victems. If the other side is more evil than you you must be the victem.

To put it another way, if you presented the United Nations with the hypothetical PCE values of both Israel and Palestine, what exactly would you expect them to do with that information? Perhaps they could provide aid to the lesser of two evils? That's not exactly much of a peace plan.

Isreal gains more millitry and other aid and greater freedom to act without running the risk of sanctions. Palistians gain more aid and limits on isreals ability to act against them without faceing sanctions. Standard stuff.

I doubt either side really wants peace, I think both side want to totally destroy the other. But your rights, debates like this are useless because the outcome is already determined - the Arabs will win.

The birthrate among Orthodox Jews is much higher than among secular Jews. Orthodox Jewish men are exempt from military service. In addition, the birthrate among Arabs is also up. Therefore within a generation or two, there will be no IDF. Demographics will give the whole stinking place to the Arabs.

Now if Hamas was smart (which they are not) they would cease the useless rocket attacks and wait out the inenviable. In the meantime they could rebuild the infrastruce and improve the economy. But they won't.

Now if Israel was smart (which they are not) they would get those Yeshiva students into the miltary and remind them that God hears their prayers just as well at the front. But they won't.

Religion will destroy Israel first. Then when the Arabs take over they won't do much better. No nation (without oil) can truly prosper when one half of the population is not allowed full participation in society. In the end religion will destroy Palestine too.

Its fun to blame the Jews.
They have a better sense of humor than the Arabs.

Right. Standing up for Palestinian civil rights= blaming the Jews.

How very mature. How very pathetic.

Out of all the bs arguments, I think you have come up with numero Uno.

*snip, snip snip * "From where I sit, this is all about as productive as two nerds flaming each other over who would win in a fight between Darth Vader and Spiderman."

The point is to vent. Just as you have done here.

By the way, the conflict is the Israeli-Arab conflict. Not the Israel-Palestine conflict.
The so-called 'Palestinian' Arabs are merely one sub-set of the overall Arab world. It's this Arab World that has decided Jewish Hegemony in the Levant shouldn't be tolerated and the Arab's opposition to the establishment of a Jewish State has been underway since the 1890's.

In the present day, Egypt and Jordan, previously bitter enemies of Israel, are the bridge to peace. Their example should serve as a path for the Palestinians, the Syrians, the Lebanese, the Iraqis, the Iranians, the Libyans, etc.

Just in case you missed what I am saying, 1337m4n, there aren't just two sides to this conflict. Reducing it to that is a mistake.

Yes. Exactly the same point as the following discussions ...

Sylvia Celeste Shoemaker & Uri vs JREF
Bigfoot vs Skeptics
Truthers vs Debunkers
Conservatives vs Liberals
Theists vs Atheists

Actually, the "clean up the mess" argument is the main argument from the Pro-Palestinian side, while the Pro-Israel argument is: "Meh, everthing is pretty fine the way it is and those who disagree are the only problem here."

Are you saying all of these issues are equally right and shouldn't be debated?

Are you saying all of these issues are equally right and shouldn't be debated?

No, my point was that all the other examples equally deserve to be discussed since they and the I/P issue obviously are all a matter of opposing opinions.

No, my point was that all the other examples equally deserve to be discussed since they and the I/P issue obviously are all a matter of opposing opinions.

Again, do you feel that all of these are equally valid opinions?

Yes. Every opinion is based on something. And JREF is meant to find the truth in between - or would you disagree?

What if the truth is demonstrably not in between?

So according to you, psychics, who fraud credulous people out of their savings, and truthers who desecrate the memory of the 9/11 victims all have valid points and should be left alone because it's their "opinion"?

You know, I just realized what your problem is Oliver, you're a damn relativist.
