Is the US Post Office socialism?

You talked about new technology replaceing the post office. To do so you need to be able to send a message to anyone. That means that they need a method of recieving. SO you need to provide people with a method of recieving such communications.
No. And you're not even trying any more.

Hey, ponderingturtle is all over the place. I'm just answering his/her questions.

i just wondered what you ment with InEruope they also make profit.
the Private Health care insurance? not on basic healthcare, for extras they are alowed to make profit, but not on basic healthcare.

i dunno about our post, but since liberalisation it sucks anyway, many small offices closed, you have to wait very long etc.

So we now have to force phone companies to give everyone free phones and internet companies to give everyone free internet? What other system to we have that is universal?
And btw, last I checked the post office charges you to send a letter or a package. They even make you buy and install your own mailbox (which cannot be used for any other purpose by law), or rent a post office box. And they will charge you more to send a package than a private carrier in many instances. So I really don't understand your demand to provide everyone with a free alternative to the post office.

I don't know about Switzerland, but I'm pretty sure insurers can be for-profit in the Netherlands.

Let me fix this for you.

ENRON Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac used its financial leverage to corrupt politicians to let them do what nobody else had done before. All it takes is a shifty businessman with a lot of leverage and a few corrupt politicians willing to bend or re-write the regs

Yup, ENRON types, with the blessing of the jelly-brain from California and the older twit Bush, gained control of the mortgage business.

yes they can, but afaik the premium is set.
The premium is set by the insurer, not the government, so there is competition as to price. But it must be the same for everyone with that particular plan with that particular insurer.

yes ur right.

Was there even a need for this thread? Post Office is paid for with service fees. Service fees that are the same no matter what your income is. Its harder to be "not socialism" that the USPS is.

Also on a side note, postal service in west Tennessee is pretty good. Most mail is delivered overnight. Package service using the post office.... isn't bad when your are on a budget either. The USPS actually pays Fedex to transport air cargo hub to hub.

It used to be fashionable to hate on the postal service. I imagine that some areas are probably mismanaged. However, some areas run really well.

How can you even ask if its socialism? That's like asking if the guy selling hunters permits is socialism. It just doesn't make sense.

No, so far as I know the proponents of UHC whipped everyone else's ass shortly after this forum was first opened.

See also libertarianism, gay marriage, and whether income tax is theft.

Now we're just going round and round again.

I don't know if I would say I like the PO but I think it is a necessity. One that did not always advertise that they were self sufficient. It is a federal service with government employees that was still using direct subsidies up until I believe less than 30 years ago. Since then they have been trying to break even. They're not there yet and and supposedly lose money. Who pays for that loss?

If they go bankrupt and get a bailout will it be socialism then?

Being protected from competition through the force of law qualifies as a subsidy in my book.
