Is Santorum Shooting His Own Foot Already?

You know, my mom told me that joke about fourty years ago. As a joke, it's not particularly offensive. The problem is that it is being raised in a very serious discussion. But since it is not Santorum making the joke, I can't get bent all out of shape about it. Santorum is an idiot. It is not surprising his supporters are idiots too. But still, it is somebody else's idiocy this time. A candidate can't be responsible for anything one of his supporters may say.

Why am I reminded of the Reverend Wright kerfuffle?

Too old, too complicated and farfetched, and relatively easily waved away by Santorum.

Round two, Governor Romney.

No, but it does remind one of some of the things that Santorum himself has said about birth control.

No doubt, but that's what people should be reminded of, not something a subordinate said. There's a reason Santorum couldn't hold his seat in Congress. He has said some incredibly hateful and stupid things. Like Ron Paul's newsletters, people should be reminded of his historical pronouncements.

I was talking about the stuff that Santorum said, and makes again an issue by joining this assault on Obama's birth control health insurance policy, which is already the policy enacted in more than half of states, many times by Republicans (e.g., Romney in MA).

As for Santorum's billionaire, his insane "joke" washes back on Santorum for the reason I just stated above -- Romney is participating in the current assault on birth control availability, which highlights is bizarre personal views on birth control, which will be considered beyond nuts by the vast majority of the electorate. Obama didn't run on a policy that reflected anything to do with the content of the Rev Wright kerfuffle, thus it was easy for him to brush it off. The "pill between the knees" will be associated with Santorum in voters' minds.

I'm wondering if Republicans are purposefully trying to get Obama reelected.

I would like to believe that stuff like the following quote would make him a laughing stock when he is running for the position of leader of the most powerful nation in the 21st century. I'd like to believe it, but I dont.

This is not a political war at all. This is not a cultural war. This is a spiritual war. And the Father of Lies has his sights on what you would think the Father of Lies would have his sights on: a good, decent, powerful, influential country - the United States of America. If you were Satan, who would you attack in this day and age? There is no one else to go after other than the United States and that has been the case now for almost two hundred years, once America’s preeminence was sown by our great Founding Fathers.

He didn’t have much success in the early days. Our foundation was very strong, in fact, is very strong. But over time, that great, acidic quality of time corrodes even the strongest foundations. And Satan has done so by attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity, and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that has so deeply rooted in the American tradition.

He was successful. He attacks all of us and he attacks all of our institutions. The place where he was, in my mind, the most successful and first successful was in academia. He understood pride of smart people. He attacked them at their weakest, that they were, in fact, smarter than everybody else and could come up with something new and different. Pursue new truths, deny the existence of truth, play with it because they’re smart. And so academia, a long time ago, fell.

Probably not, but I do suspect that some of the better candidates are waiting until a more auspicious time. I remember this in the '84 election, Ronald Reagan was very popular. The democrats put up what I thought was a token resistance with Mondale/Ferraro. Mondale, because it was "his turn" and Ferraro because they wanted to make a statement. They probably realized that they would lose, but they wanted to "send a message", especially with Ferraro. I don't doubt that the Repubs are trying very hard, but with the economy recovering and Osama Bin Laden dead and really, lots of good news, the most electable candidates are going to wait until Obama can't run again. Nixon and Cleveland won with second chances in the general election, but it doesn't happen often. Once you lose, you don't get another shot. You think Kerry will ever run again? McCain? Gore? Not likely.

The Father of Lies? Wasn't he married to The Mother of All Battles?

How about this quote?

"This idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do," Santorum complained to NPR in 2006, "that we shouldn't get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn't get involved in cultural issues ... that is not how traditional conservatives view the world."

I think I know how you might make that mistake. You are assuming that most of the people who would vote for a republicon, or run for POTUS under the inverted pentagrams of the GOP are rational. Please recalibrate and try again.

How about this?

Santorum Praises Income Inequality

"There is income inequality in America. There always has been and hopefully, and I do say that, there always will be," said the former Pennsylvania Senator. "Why? Because people rise to different levels of success based on what they contribute to society and to the marketplace and that's as it should be."

The real question though is not whether there should be income inequality, but how much. Of course people who contribute more should receive more in return. I don't think that anyone except a few kooks on the fringe are arguing that that everyone should have exactly the same income.

How much income inequality is enough?

A NY Times quote put up on Reddit yesterday indicated that the GOP primary system is allowing selection by people who are "old, white, and Christian"...

I think Santorum is finally getting the attention and scrutiny given to a front runner.

I predicted this would happen after Iowa, but it didn't happen until after his recent surge to the top of the polls.

If his popularity is only due to the perception that he's not-Romney (that he's more conservative, or a true Republican because he doesn't have Romney's baggage) and not on anything he actually offers, the more people find out about him, the more than popularity will wane, I think.

But we are getting closer to the time when hitting a peak (for any reason) could win the nomination.
