So overall what we have is a bunch of cranks claiming that a sitting governor agrees with them. If he does, I have no hesitation in agreeing that he's a crackpot. But so far the source for the story seems a little less than credible.

Well, then ignore the content. Just take the equally worrisome fact that the governor of a state is meeting with reactionary thugs who wanted him to use the office of the governor to implement their dubious anti-American ideals. Why?

Why would he have not one, but up to eight meetings with these people? What would Rush and the right wing blogosphere be saying if Andrew Cuomo was meeting with the Revolutionary Workers Party? These nuts are his base, I'd guess. Look at his denials... "those things weren't discussed while I was in the room..." He doesn't say that this isn't what those people stand for nor that he wasn't aware that these were among their positions, nor that he wasn't meeting with them.

He's threatened to sue Tipping over the book. Tipping says he looks forward to it as it might get him access to the governor's own minutes of the meetings.

But I can only imagine how FoxNews would react if someone with the same level of credibility accused a Democratic governor of meeting with a group which has been involved in murdering 6 LEOS, has been labeled a terrorist organization by the FBI, and has asserted that several elected politicians should be tried (outside the US criminal justice system) on capital charges.

Although I am not suggesting Fox News's standards are an appropriate model to emulate.

Or if the POTUS attended a church where a minister (of the, er, darker persuasion) said some outrageously hyperbolic things? Or had friends from his youth who were in radical groups? I'm not sure, but I think Hannity would do his vein-bursting-in-temple routine and we know Glenn Beck would cry.

But the governor of a state has meetings with a group who are fairly certainly responsible for at least six deaths and who pepper their speeches and their press releases with calls for overthrow of the government? "Now, now. Let's put this in perspective and wait to see some actual evidence."

Crazy people being crazy and claiming that the governor agreed with them. That is not the same thing as the governor himself being on the show and agreeing with them.

The credibility gap is not with the writer; it's his reliance on this radio show where a couple of clowns claim they met with the governor.

So apparently the first thing the governor did after receiving the request for a meeting, is to check out who these guys were.

The closest we get to actual confirmation that any meeting actually took place is this:

Okay, so what is the evidence in the emails and documents that confirm the meetings? His post at The Tipping Point is supposed to, "... allow updates after publication, links to sources, or multimedia content."

If he really has evidence that the governor met with these cranks not once, but 8 times for between 1 and 3 hours, I would certainly agree that LePage is a nut. The writer does link to this document which discusses the claims by the Sovereign Citizen kooks, but it's a weird memo. There is no date, which I find extremely odd for a legal memorandum. This makes it hard to judge the writer's claim that, "LePage only stopped meeting with the Sovereign Citizens after I filed a Freedom of Access request regarding the meetings and after his legal staff presented him with a five-page memo disputing some of the sovereigns’ beliefs."

If the governor in fact met with these kooks several times, then he's an idiot. No question about that. But the actual evidence that this happened is thin so far.

Well, this particular governor is known for ignoring or refusing to meet with state legislators who disagree with him. But he met with this group eight times, for up to three hours at a time. He also has a history of repeating the wild tales that circulated on the far right in Maine, such as a university's wind turbines have hidden motors so people would think their blades were turning in the wind, or that busloads of black people were going around rural Maine voting multiple times in mass for Obama.

Seeing as how the meetings are a fact, wouldn't you agree this is more than just being an idiot? Eight meetings with a group that's actually on an FBI watch list? A group that wants to execute public leaders for "treason"?

And you have the crazy quotes from LePage. Here's one about how wind power is a giant hoax. Where did he get this crazy idea?

“Guess what, if it’s not blowing wind outside and they have somebody visiting the campus, they have a little electric motor that turns the blades. I’m serious. They have an electric motor so that they can show people wind power works. Unbelievable. And that’s the government that you have here in the state of Maine.”
