Romeny seems to be on a roll. Going to my usual site I see that the average of various polls has the Republican hopefuls rated as follows:

Romney 30.0%
Gingrich 26.6
Santorum 16.0
Paul 12.8
undecided (by implication) 14.6

Considering that Romney also has more actual delegates, could it be that he will continue to widen his lead over Gingrich to the point that he will be the nominee apparent by the time of the Republican convention?

Yes?

But that's what I've been expecting.

Do we allow friendly bets here? Betting he gets the nom, and loses to Barack. I'd be silly to get more specific than that.

Most of the states in the February primaries are going to be friendlier to Romney, then in March there are more Southern states where Gingrich might do better -- if it's not too late by then.

My prediction is that Romney is nominated, and loses to Obama, but only by the tiniest margin, and after well over a billion is spent on negative ads about Obama.

We'll never elect a Mormon as POTUS, at least not this go-round. I may have been scared off solid political bets but I'd put small money on this.

Gingrich is only going to last as long as Adelson's money does. When that runs out, he's **********.

Nobody who isn't a complete lunatic is going to go for Paul or Santorum, so that just leaves Romney.

You mean, like you´d never elect a black man as POTUS?

I agree that Romney is the ticket, but won't win. The interesting thing to watch is how much harm Gingrich will actually do to Romney's chances of election with the current attack ads.

No. You don't have to explain the "black" thing, people know what that is... it has some coolness factor; some white folks respect and aspire to elements of black culture, while the lengthy explanations of what Mormons believe would be tough to get past.

Nobody thinks Mormons are cool or wants to be more like them.

I think Romney's the best the GOP can do this time around. I don't know how long Gingrich will stay in it, but no matter what, the party won't really unite behind Romney. I think it will be a relatively low voter turnout among Republicans. The far right will probably just stay home.

I have no idea how that all translates into electoral votes, but I'm betting Obama will win my state (Missouri) this time around. McCain won it last time by something like a tenth of a percent.

Have they all abandoned the GOP recently?

I'd say the difference is that Obama is an exceptional person. A brilliant orator, great personality. Even when his job approval is down his personal approval stays high. People tend to like him personally, which is why he was able to overcome the bigotry that animated some of his opposition. Can Romney say the same? Is he a great campaigner? No, he really seems bad at this. Does he have a great personal story to tell, like McCain or Obama? No, he's a son of a rich guy who got richer laying people off and has offshore accounts in Switzerland and the Caymans. Maybe Obama will blow it, but to elect a minority candidate and be the first of that group to hold a high office, I think you'd need to be exceptional. I don't think Romney is it, but then again I thought Perry would be the nominee, so I'm a moron when it comes to prognostication.

I've never understood Obama's reputation as an orator. Whether or not I agree with what he's saying, I've never been particularly impressed with his speeches.

If you disagree, then see if you can come up with a particularly memorable quote or phrase off the top of your head.

As an outsider I think yes Romney will get the nomination but no he won't beat Obama. Partly because he seems to have the personality of a cardboard cutout but partly because I suspect he'll be stuck with a dead weight VP candidate ala Palin to keep the Tea Party wing of the party happy.

Is it really professional for you to call people lunatics as a moderator?

His entire speech on race was amazing. Not just for what he said, but for when he said it and why. In the middle of a crisis based on things his pastor said, he turned it into a "teaching moment" and really pulled the bandaid off a deep wound. There are several moments in the speech that stand out, but I'd say that his speeches don't have a quote or line, but the entire speech is what is memorable.
