To each individual, man or beast, their own life is important. More important than most anything else.
As far as to 'the planet" no individual species has any greater or lesser value to evolution entire... Something goes extinct, later on something fills a niche.
If you mean "should humans put the worth of animals equal to or above their fellow man on the subject of empathy?" I would say ,No. If an apartment building is burning down and a man can only save a stranger or a dog, I think he is morally obligated to save the person ... but then you get into all sorts of other things ...
