I'm not sure why people think I have conservative stances. I'm voting for Obama. I'm for the separation of church and state. I'm pro choice and for the legalization of drugs and prostitution. I'm not per se against socialism.

As for the voices in your head, remember, they are god's children also.

Well, since you're disagreeing with me pretty much all the time, you must be a conservative... :p And concerning the voices in my head, they rather are Satan's demons than God's children if they tell me that you're a nice guy after all... :D :p :)

Even if God did the most awful things we can conceive of - it still wouldn't be evil because God defines what is good and evil. In a God governed universe, good and evil are thing that come from God and God determines what is good and evil.

Your line of reasoning is quite weak.
If you don't even know the reason for your existence, I suggest you keep quiet and let the wise handle difficult questions.

We need to be realistic - Man (not God) created the concepts of good and evil. Our capacity to reason is bounded by some simple principles - relativeness and polarities. We need polarities to be able to assess and judge - we cannot know ''White' if we have no concept of 'Black' - we cannot know 'good' unless we have some concept of 'bad' and the meaning of these terms are subjectively defined by culture through parenting, schooling, media etc., and of course later in life through knowledge and experience.

Yet within all of this we are conceptually bound by the laws of cause and effect - we cannot conceive of a universe which is not bound by this rule. This relates to this thread in that if we are here then there must be a reason for us being here, so the easy way out is to say "God has His reasons and we are all put here for a purpose". Sadly, most of us search and seek for our own individual purpose - but surely there is no purpose. We are here because we are here - as a consequence of historic events. There is nothing supernatural about it - it is perfectly natural. Seeking some purpose just makes us unhappy - trying to live in the future - to know what cannot be known and to forget about living now and enjoying what we have, now.

I do personally struggle with intelligent people's need for religion. For surely it is better that ethical conduct comes from within because it is the right thing to do when we live in communities, not from without (religion) as some externally imposed set of rules which promise supernatural punishment or redemption. We should behave in a 'good' manner to others and strive to live up to our values in life because it is best for everyone.

It just seems strange to me to have to behave 'good' in fear of the anger and viscious condemnation of an all loving and compassionate god - what a strange and bizarre contradiction that is.
