“The Ashura brigades of Basij forces are ready to be deployed to London as peacekeeping forces,” Brigadier General Mohammad-Reza Naqdi said on Thursday, Fars news agency reported.

Naqdi criticized the British authorities for their harsh crackdown of protesters and describing them as rioters and hooligans.

“Unfortunately the crimes and violence of the autocratic British kingdom continues against the country's deprived [population] and not only the advice of well-wishers has no effect on the conduct of the regime's repressive police force but we witness the deprived people of this country are being called a bunch of thieves and looters,” he regretted.

Naqdi expressed disappointment with the UN Security Council as invariably supporting oppressors.

“If the UN General Assembly approves, the Basij Organization is ready to send a number of Ashura and al-Zahra brigades to Liverpool and Birmingham as peacekeepers to monitor observation of human rights laws and deter use of force,” he added.

What baffles me is who the intended audience for this rhetoric is. Obviously nobody in the west takes this seriously. Also didn't some Iranians recently try to overthrow their government, but were shut down due the autocracy of the regime, so I doubt they are buying this.

The only thing I can think of is this is the Iranian government's version of a Daily Affirmation. They seem to be trying to convince themselves that they are good enough, smart enough, and doggonit, people like them.

It's for internal propaganda. Like when the government announces amazing new weapons that are really just junk welded together.

I'm not sure they realize how grotesque they sound.

It's like when Ahmadinejad claimed in front of an American university audience that there were no homosexuals in Iran.

Of course the crowd burst out laughing, but he didn't seem to understand the absurdity of what he just said, he just smiled and thought he made a good joke, not realizing the crowd was laughing at him. They are so ideologically brainwashed that they are really living on another planet.

They are sending advisers to help crush the rebellion in Syria.

I think this sort of thing is said just because the opportunity to say it feels so satisfying to them.

When the Bush v. Gore election debacle was going on in the U.S., Fidel Castro offered his assistance in conducting fair elections. I don't think anyone took it seriously either, but it was pretty darn funny and just emphasized that we world powers who often intervene elsewhere aren't without our problems.

Except Ahmadinejad and his friends should be careful not to make too many bad jokes, or the next thing they'll see is a couple of nuclear warheads facing their way.

Now, that's what I call a tough audience!
