iPod versus washing machine

I think it's really stupid that all these gee wiz electronic baubles are so vulnerable to normal hazards, they're worthless to me.
So... You think it's really stupid that iPods, by virtue of being electronic, are just as susceptible to water damage as other electrical devices like hair dryers and computers? Do you find hair dryers and desktop computers "useless" because if you dunk them in water they cease to function? How about the ceiling in your house? If you have a leak in your roof, your ceiling will suffer water damage, and could potentially cease functioning. Is your ceiling then useless? How about suede products? They're often ruined by exposure to water. Are they useless too?

It may be that I've misinterpreted what you're trying to say, but it sounds as if you are trying to say that every product ever made should be able to withstand any and all possible accident and/or misuse, and that owners of said products should not be required to properly care for their own belongings. I find that rather unreasonable.

It might be a single board, but I'm willing to bet that it's comprised of many layers - like the mobo of a computer is. A mobo is a single board but it has many layers & a great many z-axis interconnections, it's a sandwich that's never meant to be taken apart because the inter layer connections are permanent connections, not plug'n'socket arrangements.

Ahhh, OK, you do mean a true multilayer board. When you said z-axis interconnections you threw me off. I thought you meant a ribbon connector and not a via.

If water gets into a via and between the layers you're toast.

1. Do not try to turn the device On (extremely important despite your instinct to see if it still works).
2. Attempt to disassemble ASAP so that the battery can be removed.
3. Using methods described above, fully dry the internals.
