iPad Reactions

GrenME, I think for your first two 'requirements' the key word is 'should'. Not 'must', 'should'.

You mean the promotional video that was immediately pulled when it was discovered it contained screenshots taken from a desktop Mac and not the iPad? Hanlon's Razor would seem to apply.

And?

And so what if they claimed the iPad is "the best way to experience the web?" That was a subjective claim made in the context of a marketing presentation. It's called selling a product, and as already discussed it is nothing that other companies don't do themselves all the time. Is there a big media backlash when Lexus claims they have the best luxury car? How about when McDonalds claims they have the best value for one-dollar?
I thought my point was quite clear - Apple's claims are legitimate areas for criticism, to criticise the iPad for not being "the best way to experience the web" arises from Apple's claims not from what people wanted the iPad to be or because the iPad does not do what they want it to do.

Nah, we just "don't get it" and we "aren't the people it's targeting."

Or something like that.

It's all marketing, every word, which means that Apple is given tons of leeway to say whatever they want, because hey, it's just marketing.

From CNNMoney.com

Day 1 estimate: 120,000 iPads sold

The team at Investor Village's AAPL Sanity board have completed their initial analysis of pre-orders for the iPad tablet computer.

Apple (AAPL) began taking orders on Friday for delivery starting April 3.
Based on a sampling of 99 orders (for 110 iPads) over 19.5 hours, and not counting units that were reserved but not ordered, the Sanity team estimates:
Nearly 120,000 iPads sold.

"Apple has been able to generate over $75 million in revenue in one day on a product that 99.9% of purchasers haven't touched or for that matter, even seen in person," said Victor Castroll, an analyst with Valcent Financial Group. "And, we're still three weeks away. That is amazing."

I'm not sure if "amazing" would be my first choice of adjectives.

Proving that Apple fanboys will buy literally anything shiny with an Apple logo on it.

It is my understanding that the device is able to operate at least partially without any need for a computer, yes. I'm sure there will be some functions that require external support, but I would assume these to be more advanced features.

A compter with iTunes is required to back up, restore, or do system software upgrades of an iPad. It may also be needed to do the initial set up. But it's not required for day to day operation.

A friend is planning to get one for his grandmother. He will back it up to his laptop when he visits.

The Apple Website claims :
A magical and revolutionary product
at an unbelievable price.
Starting at $499.
That's 3 Lies in one Sentence.
"magical" - It's based on well known Science, no Supernatural Stuff here.
"revolutionary" - Tablet PCs have been around for a long time.
"unbelievable price" - being ironic, eh ? Apple Fanboys pay 2x-3x more than the Windows Guys.
In my opinion, a reasonable Price would be 200-300$, unbelievable would be 99$ or less.

Reviews are starting to come in...

When the hype dies down I'm guessing there will be two outspoken camps. People who own it and use it for a bunch of daily activities and absolutely love it and tell everyone how awesome it is and those who think those people are idiot fan-boys and will take every opportunity to mention that to the person next to them when they see a guy in a Starbucks reading a book on it.

One surprising thing I read in a review...video playback was not 10 hours like Apple claimed. One reviewer got 12.25 hours.

Andy Ihnatko posted his review last night. Sure, the iPad is cool – but is it a real computer?

His video of talking the iPad out of it's box is good for a few chuckles.

I got a laugh from his opening paragraph:
If you’ve been honking on and on since January about how the iPad is “just a big iPhone,” you’ll want to lie low for a few more weeks before appearing in public with your new toy. It takes a big man to admit that he’s wrong; I applaud your sentiment. But you’ll probably want to wait until your family have begun to forget about how you called your niece a “lobotomized Kool-Aid drinking Apple fangirl” and made her cry during her First Communion.

So far imo Engadget has the most balanced review - http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/03/apple-ipad-review/

I am not getting one. I don't need one. I don't really want one. But if someone were to give it to me I would use it. It's one of those things. And if I was going to buy a tablet or tablet-like device many things I feel are necessary for me to consider purchasing one are absent with the iPad (as well as the JooJoo although I admit it does look purdy).

From my perspective, the iPad is irrelevant; I can't really do with it what I need to do. I won't knock people who buy it; I've had a couple of hours one belonging to one of my friends, and it was a nifty gadget.

Worthy of all this hype, though? Definitely not. There's just a bit of cultish fanaticism about Apple products. And by "a bit", I mean a lot. When I told this friend of mine that I thought the iPad wasn't the greatest thing ever and that I'd rather wait for the Slate, he almost bit my head off.

Exactly. Apple implied that their device was capable of carrying out tasks it couldn't. In many countries that's enough for consumer protection legislation to be invoked.

Why are guys getting heated up over a mid-priced media player/web-surfing device?
I'm not........ And I'd describe it as an overpriced media player/web-surfing device.

Arguing with a Apple Fanboy is a lot like arguing with someone in a cult.

Absolutely.

Delayed deliveries to international markets due to strong sales.

I wont be getting one but I will be getting next gen iPhone.

I played with one at the Apple store last week. I really wanted to like it but, yeah, it's just a big iPod touch or iPhone(I bet I'm the first person to make that observation!).

The lack of a file management system really makes it a pain to get files on it and you can't even print off of it. I'll pass.

I've heard that Apple is working on an upgrade to their OS that will introduce a revolutionary new feature called "folders". (Remember like when they added "copy" and "paste" - look how every other OS now has that feature.)
