iPad Reactions

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to participate in the Apple cult, and the media should be ashamed of itself.

I've seen quite a number of articles on the Internet by main stream news sources that are critical of the device.

And yes, the media is going to talk about the product because people want to hear about it and discuss it whether they like they device or not. Which is why this thread has over 3000 views and 250 replies.

Apparently I'm in a tiny minority, but ever since I got my iPhone a couple years ago, I thought it would be great to have "something like an iPhone, but bigger, and not a phone." Then again, I have a specific use in mind for it: replacing all the music books I might otherwise bring to a gig. I can't sit my laptop on a music stand, and my iPhone is too small to read from at a distance, but the iPad seems like the perfect solution. Combine that with the iBook and word processing features, and it's pretty close to exactly what I was hoping for. (I don't mind reading from an LCD screen.) So yeah, despite the widespread hate for this thing, I'll probably spring for one (and brave the contemptuous sneers that will follow).

The viewing angle may bite you though. LCD screens, even the best, don't have very wide angles before there is viewing degradation.

May I assume that you are going to scan in all of those music books? I doubt you'll find them all in digital format (if any). The music industry isn't exactly cutting edge most of the time. They still sell lesson videos on VHS (I don't even have a VHS player anymore). Scanning thousands of pages is a brutish, mind-numbing, slow task. You will probably kill someone before you're done. ;)

You have to wonder if this is one of those products that is too high priced for those in the market for a Tablet, and those who want a lot of extra capabilities will not like the limitations, and spend a couple hundred more for a laptop instead.

More? $500 is enough for a nice laptop, as long as you are not a total mac fanboy.

I really don't mean to come off as Mr. Defender of Apple products (especially since my last purchases were a netbook and a Kindle for my wife) but don't you think some people would rather watch video on a larger screen than a netbook and they'd be okay hopping on a plane with only a couple dozen movies and TV shows than fifty or sixty?

And you do realize how painfully slow netbooks are right?

But I'm with you 100% on the lack of flash. It's omission is mind-boggling.

So save some money and by a laptop. Hell I have seen netbooks with HDMI ports so you can really have a big screen. With a laptop/netbook, you can hook it up to your TV after all.

They certainly could. And have. For some years now. :) The vertical market apps which sprang up around tablets for use in the medical community, not least of which the Motion I've mentioned here, are abundant. A friend works in IT at a major university hospital local to here. His job is specifically to support the portable and laptop devices used by the hospital, and he's been phasing out Motion tablets that have served their useful service life and been replaced by new ones.

My brother used a tablet as a Paramedic for years. This is not a new market and I don't think that the IPad is the best device for this.

Fair enough. I don't have much experience in hospitals.

But my point remains - a tablet device is less of a replacement for a normal deskop or laptop computer, and more of a mobile specialised information-processing tool. Another application I thought of was for architects or building foremen, so that they can carry about the complete blueprints. Or field scientists, for recording data on the fly. The list goes on. An iPad could fill all these niche markets, depending on how cleverly its apps are programmed. Of course, as you point out, it's not the only available device that can do that. The iPhone isn't the only available mobile phone device either, nor is the iPod the only portable music player.

Of course with a real tablet, all the software is already there, and you don't have to worry about compatibility issues with the rest of your computers as much.

Why not one of those tablet netbooks?

Say like this

This device isn't for me, because I have an iPhone, and I can tolerate the small screen for video on e.g. a plane or a bus, but I would like a much better reader, so I'll probably buy the Kindle DX. Now why does that have to be so ******* expensive?

It is an apple product. All that extra cool costs money.

(I'm assuming a "netbook" is one of those really tiny laptops). If you want to use it on the bus on your way to work, you don't want to wait for a minute and a half for it to boot up just to the login screen, then log in, and then wait another minute and a half for whatever it is a PC does after you login. Also, the netbook is probably not better for music, and is definitely worse as a reader. (The screen will be oriented the wrong way).
Get a tablet netbook.

I found it fun to read the similar reactions right after the realease of the ipod.

And remember, this criticism is from the Apple fans.

Pretty much the same line the ipad is getting now. "There are already products that offer this, and much cheaper, etc etc." Many of them thought that the ipod was inferior to something called the "NOMAD Jukebox".

Don't think that Apple has shirked their research. With the ipod, the specific usefulness of the size, the speed of transfer and the itunes software, and yes, the cool design, were all underestimated at first.

I would really like to have something with this form factor but more capability. I bought a convertible a few years ago, still use it in the kitchen for looking up recipes on the internet but it's slow. I have a netbook which I use for travel and the screen is perfect for watching videos but it's too short top to bottom for some applications, like ereading. I'm not aware of a reader application that re-orients the screen for better use. I'd rather (right now) carry the netbook and a kindle than use the iPad that can't do as much as the other two. I don't know how you would reconcile the screen, I like e-ink for reading and a nice color display for everything else but if I had to compromise on one display in one device, I'd rather compromise in the direction of the color display as the iPad does. So...

Is anyone here actually planning on buying one in, say, the next three months?

LOL. Ultimate web experience? Sure....

What? No bangbros? No way I buy that thing!

That's another application I hadn't thought about before.

Sneaking off to the bathroom with a netbook hidden under a newspaper simply doesn't work.

Sneaking off to the bathroom with an iPad hidden under a newspaper...this is life-changing!
