It's kind of interesting to be sort of anonymously famous. Everywhere you go, even in other countries, you run into people who know about [Snopes.com], but of course no one recognizes me! People are always trying to tell me that it has vastly more influence than I realize. [Laughs.] I hope not!

Now that brings back memories of the good old days of alt.folklore.urban, where I made my first ever Usenet posts in early 1997 (or was it late 1996?), and where David and Barbara Mikkelson were always around. Excellent schooling in skeptical thinking that group was, and anyone who posted anything stupid or long-debunked could count on having their head bitten off with varying degrees of politeness. I seem to recall Snopes was also the name of their cat at the time.
