Internet via electricity?

I don’t follow you.

You weren't meant to - that was the whole point. I'm trying to find a very obscure post to test a theory about editing your own post. Sorry I had to post it here.

There are some test threads in the Forum Help forum that might be ideal for that.

Amazing necro-thread reanimation. Mrs by the Hedge's MSc was based around this tech, must be 25 years ago, using a building's mains power infrastructure to carry LAN data. This was back when it still looked like wifi would struggle to cope with the numbers of devices needed by businesses.

As I remember, one of the big interference problems was buildings tended to pick up lots of AM radio in the mains wiring. It was worst on higher floors but anything from two or three storeys up had a problem.

You have reminded me of my ex...

While she was staying on campus at her university, she discovered that her toaster was playing the local AM radio station. (Quiet, tinny, but sufficient for her to be able to identify the music that was playing.)

My best guess, having not been there at the time, was that the heating wire was acting as an aerial, and the mica plates that kept that wire in place, were acting like the diaphragm of a speaker.

The antenna for the AM station was on the building next door to her dorm.

:)
