...just downloaded this (freely available, but you need to have a validated copy of windows XP).

It looks much nicer that the old version (looks disturbingly similar to firefox actually).

I seemed to have problems with page loading speed, especially with the phishing filter turned on.

I also have some problems with images not being displayed, for example as I type this, the icons I can select to appear next to the post title are not shown, unless I right-click and tell them to be shown (individually).

Tabs are good. Same shortcut keys (Ctrl+T) as with firefox...

It's easy to adjust the zoom, which is proably useful if you have problems with small text.

There is no built-in spell checker (as far as I can tell), a feature which Opera has, although there will possibly be a plug-in available?

Overall: big improvement, but I'm certainly not migrating back from firefox.

ETA: I've just discovered that it scrolls in a irritatingly jerky way. Deduct one point!

Figures. Of course, like you I'm not going back from Firefox. I've been fully converted.

It's pathetic.

I doubt I will ever use Internet Explorer again. Not even when version 8 is released in 2015.

I never install a new Microsoft product until it's been out at least six months, and some of the major security patches have been created.

The only reasons I still use IE are 1. Work and 2. Sometimes forms don't work right in Firefox. Otherwise it's Firefox all the way.

Ditto what alfaniner said. I would use Firefox 100% at work if not for the fact that several of our internal Java apps only work properly in IE.

Can you post some screenshots? I havnt seen it yet. Does it have tabs and does it support transparent pngs?

I've just downloaded it, and it didn't go to the xp verification screen.

Does it support plugins? I can't live without my Mouse Gestures, Flashgot, Session Saver and Adblock

Ive been running it at work for a while, for a laugh. It's pretty gross. Looks like they tried to take the good ideas from other browsers and drag themselves kicking and screaming into late 2002.
In order to add google as a search engine you have to download an executable file and run it. I spy "install my cool search bar" trojans a-plenty.
It's unthemable in reality, as with the rest of XP, and by default looks horrible, and takes up a lot of desktop space with clutter.
What they've failed on most of all is HCI. For example, why are there two menu systems, one on the left and one on the right? Etc.
The centralised "anti-phishing" thing is probably a good move, but they're still failing to address the causes of most people's Internet frustrations. You can't just keep adding patches to fix problems, you need to go back to the drawing board at some point, and they're just putting it off again and again...

A lot of the Geeky sites warned against downloading the Beta version...

I wont be using it...Not for a good year or so...Give them time to sort the bugs out...

I won't be using it at all. Too little, much too late.

If you want a spell checker, google "iespell"

I use Maxthon, it uses the IE engine, but has tabs and a whole host of other goodies.

It may have all the "goodies" as you put it, but the main problem with an IE shell is that it still has all the bad things about it. Bad security, exploits and awful page rendering.
