Interesting 2014 Races and Propositions

North Carolina Senate District 16,

The Republican candidate is Jason Mitchell, who will be on the ballot as "Molotov Mitchell". Mitchell made news nationally in 2010 when he posted a video in support of a Ugandan anti-homosexuality law that would have imposed the death penalty on violators. Worse, he's a WND columnist who is still a birther. Is this really Senatorial material, even in North Carolina?

The Republican candidate is Gary Glenn. Second only to "Dr. Chaps" in Colorado, he is homophobic of the first rank. He was President of the American Family Association of Michigan since 1999 and also one of two co-authors of the Marriage Protection Amendment approved by Michigan voters in 2004. He's pretty far right, to say the least. Can someone so far out there win a general election?

This person is not representative of the GOP position. He/She is an extreme example.

Scott DesJarlais is the incumbent here. He's the "family values", anti-abortion doctor who had affairs with his patients and asked them to get abortions. The question here is can this utter hypocrite and loony rightist get re-elected?

This person is not representative of the GOP position. He/She is an extreme example.

Jody Hice is running to replace Paul Braun. There is another thread here about Hice (I think) so I won't say more than if you thought it was impossible to get a candidate even more nuts than Braun, think again.

Lenar Whitney (R) is running for this open seat. She is truly scary. She believes climate change is “the greatest deception in the history of mankind.” If you watch this, have a garbage pail available to barf into. Can such an extreme pol win even in Louisiana's fever swamp of political bias.

This person is not representative of the GOP position. He/She is an extreme example.

This is just a local race but features an extremely interesting character: Michael Peroutka. He is an unabashed secessionist, racist and nutball. Will a Maryland county elect someone who advocates such oddball views?

This person is not representative of the GOP position. He/She is an extreme example.

Oh who am I kidding. I give up.

Anyone know if California is still gonna be voting to carve itself up into enclaves of the super rich and vast areas of poor?

You may recall that the Democratic candidate for Senate (and fill-in Senator) in Montana had to drop out of the race when it was revealed that he plagiarized large portions of his Master's Degree thesis. He has been replaced by State Representative Amanda Curtis. Her husband is the local rep for the IWW (Wobblies) and she's pretty far out there. How far?

On August 7, 2014, Rep. Curtis changed her Facebook profile photograph to a picture of former Communist Party USA chair Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, who received a state funeral from the Soviet Union in 1964.

The mission statement for the Two Rivers General Membership Branch of IWW (of which Kevin Curtis is a leader and Amanda Curtis is a member) is:

The Two Rivers General Membership Branch consists of members of the Industrial Workers of the World, a.k.a. Wobblies, from across the state of Montana (Missoula, Hamilton, Butte, and Billings). We are working to organize the people of Montana into the One Big Union to end wage slavery and eventually end the capitalist system.

My guess is that the Dems figured they're going to lose anyway, so why not throw some chum in the water for the entertainment value.

"This person is not representative of the GOP Democrat position. He/She is an extreme example."

This country could use an actual radical socialist in higher politics, even if just to show that the Democratic Party isn't radically socialist.

Let me get this straight: You're saying this person is not representative of the GOP Democrat position. He/She is an extreme example. Is that right?

I did not specify a person, I was making a general statement. Conclude what you will.

Mary Burke, the Democrat opposing Governor Scott Walker in Wisconsin, has played heavily on her business experience in running Trek Bicycles' European operations. Burke got the job the old-fashioned way; she was the daughter of the company founder. And while she claimed to have quit because of burnout, it appears that was not the case:

Albers flew to Trek’s European headquarters and quickly discovered that John Burke wasn’t exaggerating.

“I pretty much came back with the same conclusions that John Burke had made; and that was that we had major people problems over there and were in a situation where we could lose a lot of people. We were losing a lot of money and I couldn’t see where Mary Burke was going to turn this thing around.”

Albers reported his findings to Richard Burke, who listened intently and then, Albers says, acted decisively.

“The family—and by that I mean Dick and John Burke—finally agreed to bring her back. And so, to say it bluntly, she was fired.”

I'm surprised no one's mentioned The Other Future of the Republican Party, Mia Love.

She started out with a huge lead (+10), which has been whittled down to about +4.5, with a final debate on the 30th, after which there are no polls.

This, after amassing a war chest of roughly $20 for every vote she got (and is likely to get) in 2012 in the same district. And that's not counting the dark money. Mia, as "the future of the Republican Party", attracts a whole lot of conservative money from out-of-state.

As a solid Dem supporter for purposes of this forum, I refuse to believe that they'll beat Love. She lost once and if she's going to continue to be the Sweetheart of Fox News, she has to win, and I'd sure hate to miss out on the fun if she does.

But surely the voters realize she'll serve one term and run for something bigger, don't they? What are her choices:

1. Vice-President in 2016 on the GOP ticket if a troglodyte like Cruz or Santorum is nominated.
2. Challenge Bob Lee in the GOP Senatorial Primary. That would assume she isn't sniffing around the vice-presidency as you have to gear up a primary challenge very early.
3. Wait for Hatch's next election and challenge in the primary that's 2018.
3.A. Hatch is waiting for her to win and serve a year so he can resign.
3.B. Hatch will be convinced to resign although he doesn't want to.

On 3A and 3B, I'm not sure.... does the Governor still appoint a Senator for an open seat in Utah, or is it temporary until a special election can be held?

Joni Ernst is the Republican candidate for the Senate. She thinks that "Congress should not pass any laws 'that the states would consider nullifying.'” Nullification is an outdated, legally untenable idea that is long past its "sell by" date. Yet Joni persists; will Iowans buy it?

A couple nights ago Rachel Maddow had footage of Joni Ernst implying that Second Amendment solutions are in order for Federal officials enforcing certain laws.

Do we need to give combat pay to Obamacare Navigators?

And now she's deployed the swastika against her opponent:
