When I was in high school (late 80s) I bought the first Mission Earth book because there were already several books available and I would try anything from a prolific SF author. I quit reading in less than 100 pages. It was gibberish. Only years later did I learn who Hubbard was and that the bestseller status of his books was a Scientology trick.
 
I don't think you have to be famous to start a cult. It just takes the right sort of sociopathic personality with a bit of charisma.

John W Campbell and AE Van Vogt should bear the cross of setting Hubbard on his despicable way. Campbell for providing all the free publicity for the launch of Hubbard's pseudoscience, "Dianetics" and AE Van Vogt for letting Hubbard rip off his fiction. Without those two Hubbard would never have had the impetus to launch scientology.

You can also see how much of Heinlein's work Hubbard 'borrowed' for his religion in "Lost Legacy" from 1941. You've got Atlantis, sacred mountains, psychic powers that you can learn from an organization of secret masters, evil enemies secretly controlling government, media, and industry.

They were showing the congress questioning today live on youtube.

I watched a bit of it and one congress person, a mr burlison stated "we know we are billions of light years away from any other system..snip." and none of the panel corrected them, disappointing.

Likely that no one else on the panel realized that there was anything to correct. US politicians frequently display an impressive lack of actual knowledge.

All BS. All of it. Old stories, old allegations. ZERO PROOF.

Just ghost stories, poorly told. Seriously, no one working for an intelligence agency, working on secret projects, and black projects needs to have their lives threatened. It doesn't happen. Everyone with a security clearance understands that if they disclose sensitive information, and or mishandle sensitive materials they get 14 to 25 years in federal prison (not the fun kind). These hearings were like X-Files fan fiction written by teenagers.

Why are USAians so obsessed with the idea that the government or military would be the first to know about aliens?

I am quite sure that if a UFO - or a UAP - crashed in Denmark, it would be found and photographed by hundreds of civilians long before our government even heard about it. I think the same goes for most countries here.

It is also curious that UFOs crash repeatedly in the US but never in other countries. The aliens must be acutely aware of our political borders, and the relative strength of each country.
