'...Barring a last-minute stay of execution, five anonymous marksmen bearing rifles will take their places late on Thursday in a prison room to carry out the request of death-row inmate Ronnie Lee Gardner: execution by firing squad. ...'

From http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/us_and_canada/10254279.stm

Looks like the bloodlust in parts of the USA knows no bounds. The report goes on to say: -

'...The marksmen, along with members of staff who contributed to the planning of the execution, will be given a commemorative Gardner coin.

It was Mr DeLand who introduced the tradition of handing out commemorative badges for "service beyond their ordinary daily duties". Apparently, this time, staff preferred something "a bit more modern". ...'

Unbelievably, this murdering bloodlust is rewarded instead of being abhorred. The depths to which the human conscience is driven by this disgusting practice is shown by the testimony of other state murderers. From the same article.

'...But unnamed officers who took part in the last execution by firing squad this week described their experiences to the Salt Lake Tribune.

One described it as an "assignment, nothing more than getting an order to do something like kicking in a door to serve a warrant".

Another likened John Albert Taylor's execution to "returning a defective product to the manufacturer". ...'

Their callous inhumanity is literally unbelievable. I hope they never get near anything more dangerous than a pointy stick.

Shame on Utah and its barbarism and all those who will murder this man and all those who choose to take part and watch this disgusting event.

Don’t forget the victims.
By the time the shoot-out at Met Hall was over, one attorney was dead, one guard was wounded and Ronnie Lee Gardner had a bullet hole in his lung."

Gardner was given the death sentence in November of 1985.

But that was just the beginning of a 25 year legal fight, an effort that includes multiple Appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court.

But one who did not live to see Gardner's execution is Nick Kirk.

Kirk was the court bailiff who Gardner shot a quarter century ago.

Badly wounded, Kirk would not return to work for half a year.

He passed away just before Christmas in 1995.

His last few years were marked by a pain that never went away, emotional pain and pain from a bullet lodged in his stomach.

Hang on a second. This was the condemned man's request? To be shot by firing squad? It's not bloodlust on the part of the executioners then, but the condemned man!

I have a cunning plan, Baldrick. I shall request execution by firing squad, and as the date approaches, I shall file an appeal stating that it's cruel and unusual, thereby dragging the process out for years more. I'll die of natural causes before this is through!

Several years later

What do you mean, "the appeal was denied"?

I wish it was on TV.

This is the beautiful part:

ABC Channel 4 Story said:

CNN Story said:
Among the claims Gardner raises in his appeals is that he has been a death row inmate too long. "He asserts that executing him now, after nearly 25 years on death row in Utah, so lacks retributive or deterrent value that it violates the Eighth Amendment,"

That's chutzpah!

Buh-bye Mr Gardner. :)

I am convinced E.J.Armstrong is not human, but a bot-style computer program.

It is certainly not up to Turing test. It simply keeps repeating same crap and refuses to engage in any kind of discussion. Rather similar to early attempts at coversation-simulating programs like ELIZA and PARRY.

Not only E.J.Armstrong is not human, it is obsolete by about 40 years.

See Monty Python's Meaning of Life for the execution I would choose.:p

EJ- get all British forces off the Island of Eire, than come back and talk to us about inhumane treatment.

He killed a man in a state where he knew they had the death penalty. How is executing a murderer inhumane?

I'd have to go with what Curly said once when the Three Stooges were to be executed but offered the choice of their manner of death. He said "old age".

I don't understand the OP. The inmate is a murderer, he requested the method of execution (I am sure to make it as "disdainful" as possible because he's running out of appeals) and you're somehow outraged over that?

Spend a day with his victims' families and tell them how you really feel at the end.

Honestly, the stuff you come up with EJA, makes me wonder if you're sincere in what you post or if you really are as inhuman as you're trying to portray the state.

Monster

Too bad it couldn't be like when Gary Gilmore was executed. People were encouraged to turn off their lights so they executioners could have more electricity to kill him.

You know us and our wacky Usan sense of humor!!

Then there was the time when they were asked what they wanted for their last meal:

Stooges: Strawberries
Warden: Strawberries aren't in season for another 6 months
Stooges: We'll wait!

Gilmore was executed by firing squad. :)

No way...then the Republic of Ireland will have to deal with the mess that is Ulster.
The Brits created the mess, they should stay and clean it up.

If EJ wants to oppose the Death Penalty, fine, but to totally ignore what Gardner did to get the death penalty is just plain stupid.
And when is the last time that EJ protested Inhumane Behavior by anybody other then the US or Israel ?
