Incest in a lift

Thanks. But we aren't talking about 50 generations, right? Or am I missing something. You said 16 great great great. Perhaps there is some ambiguity in the time frames.

I may have explained myself badly, and yes, this is speculation on my part, but I think with a fairly solid basis.

The doubling each generation has to break down at one point, the maths shows that to be true.

I am speculating, based on the fact that communities were far more isolated 100 years ago, that that doubling would break down for most people at around the great-great grandparent point. Generationally speaking, it's really not that long ago that marrying one's cousin wasn't even cause for a raised eyebrow.

I freely admit, I'm guessing, but I think it's a fair guess.

I am fairly sure most modern Americans do in fact have 16 distinct great-great-grandparents, but that's because we are an immigrant nation. Pick someone in a small village in Russian or Indian backwater, and "16 distinct great-great-grandparents" becomes far less of a certainty.

Rational basis is that there were fewer people in the past than today. Since every generation back doubles the number of your ancestors, it does not take long before the theoretical number of your ancestors exceeds then-population of Earth. Solution to this paradox is that some of your ancestors on mother's side were also your ancestors on father's side. And more so as you go farther back.
Yes I know this. I question whether 5 generations is sufficient to generalize.

Thank you for phrasing well what I was struggling so hard to put into words.

I honestly don't know and I'm skeptical of intuitions since we are all wrong about so many things, But I don't know.

Indeed.

This might seem to suggest I'd need a few more greats.

ETA: Mark6's point about immigration then makes me think perhaps I might.

My sister has traced our roots to Ireland and Denmark.
But not far into the past.
The two lines came off the boats about the same time in the 19th Century.

Can you imagine anything more depraved than this?

For those who don't want to click the link, a young couple (21 and 18) who were caught on CCTV having sex in a lift turned out to be brother and sister. Ick!

From the look of them it's entirely possible their mom and dad are brother and sister too.

Not having read all 5 pages of this thread, my apologies to anyone who may already have made this observation. :)

There's nothing wrong with 'beastiality'.

In fact, there's no such thing.

Sure there is. It's what Belle did.

You were indeed beaten to it, but your point is so true, it was definitely worth repeating. :D

People sure hate the beautiful around here. They look just like my mother-wife and father-brother!

Must have been a quickie. There are only two floors at Motherwell Station.

LOL!

And as they left for a second time Richard gave Kirsty a £20 note.
I don't know why but I find that to be the most interesting part of the story. He paid his sister to have sex with him. The word "loser" doesn't begin to cover it.

I am having a hard time believing this story and the pics are real. The guy looks a lot like that X-Files character who ate roadkill.

Hey now! He gave her the money as a brother, not for payment. Don't go slandering the couple. ;)
