In simple words, what do Democrats do for minorities?

Didnt you hear? The best way to help group X is to do absolutely nothing for them!!!!

Actually, throughout human history, the vast majority of the persecuted would be happy if government did nothing -- aside from protect basic rights like they should.

Yeah thats great. But were talking politics. Who votes for the guy who promises nothing??? Sorta like that a Seinfeld episode. "Whats your campaine platform?" "Our platform is nothing!"

Even when giant million dollar company comes to town, whats the first thing they ask for? Tax breaks or free infrastructer so they can build their plants.

And whats up with bringing up the welfare and AA programs as they worked 30 years ago? Step into the now. Things are totally different in the 2000's

The dems have been thought of as the party for the minority because they repeatedly say exactly that every single election cycle and have done so for years and years.

Period. End of discussion as to why they are *thought* of that way.

The question still remains... what have the democrats actualy done? This isnt a popular opinion question at all. This is about actions.

It could possibly be argued that the large rise in minimum wage under Clinton was for the minorities... but I think thats stretching it a bit due to that pesky cause and effect thing..

Electrix - it appears that your friend didn't answer the question. He or she said "Republicans WANT, WANT, WANT." But you asked what Republicans DO for minorities, not what they WANT - hell, everyone WANTS minorities to succeed, etc.

Just off the top of my head, the average number of children women on welfare have is the same as the national average. The longer a woman is on welfare, the fewer children she tends to have. So the stereotype of women breeding to get a bigger check is a falsehood, although it may have been true decades ago, I don't know. I can dig up the source if you need it.

Welfare and AA are far cries from what they were in the old days. If you are on welfare and have a nother kid you dont get extra money. Quotas are also illegal.

What do demorcats do for minorities. Look at the last election. They were against outsourceing (keeping the workers jobs in the states) environmental protection (pollution tends to hit the poorer neighborhoods harder) civil rights protection (big deal for religious, ethnic, gay, minorities) affordable health care, (another big deal), anti-war (many poor and minorities in the military) increase education opportuinities, union freindly, shifting tax burden to higher incomes. All those generally benefit minorities.

People have provided many examples of what the dems provide. Care to reply, or just ignore everyone keep up the mantra "What do dems do? what do dems do?"

Thanks everyone. I'm getting the feeling that the guy I was debating with didn't want to actually have a serious discussion about these things in terms of responding about the Republican side of things, and it seems like the original intention of his "what do Dems do for minorities?" question was more I think to hopefully show some sort of hypocrisy (i.e. the Democrats say they are for minorities but don't actually do anything for them). It seems like he turned it around into a debate about the merits of what they do, since it was no longer a question of IF they do anything.

Which is what I was getting at with the Guestworker legislation...politics is structured so that either side can deny that the opposition has 'done' anything.

But it is always interesting to see people like your friend, who are *soooo* concerned with minority issues, and yet can't discuss critical ones.

Yeah, I think that's a good point.

Side Note:

Being that the Republican are in charge its hard for the Dems to really accomplish anything. Theyd like to, but ya know how the system works when one party calls the shots.

So, I'm wondering if anyone might be able to help me out in how to respond to someone like this, who wants me to "prove" that the Democrats are in fact doing things for minorities.
Lyndon Baines Johnson is an example of a democrat who did things for minorities. According to page 336 of "Vietnam: A History" by Stanley Karnow, Lyndon Baines Johnson fought for social justice, economic and racial equality, promoting the most progressive legislation in those areas in decades.
