If you want to get into the semantics of it. Yes. He did "exploit" him. However the damage done from his exploiting them to them exploiting him is not comparable. If they had simply told the media to stop focusing on it and that it wasn't a big deal and that they were not bothered then he would never of been fired. However they milked it for all it was worth and played the whole "victim" role and claimed that they had been "Scarred for life" and their coach used the whole thing as a platform to pimp her team (:D). The whole thing was ridiculous.

When I said "no one listens to anymore" I didn't mean he had zero listeners...believe it or not. But he still (according to UPI) has half the ratings he did ten years ago, a quarter of Rush's and less than half of what Stern had when he was on FM.

Well, unfortunately now no one will really listen to him anymore because of this over reaction. (for the record, I hate Imus, big Stern fan, F Jackie).

hey those grape pickers taught people a thing or two.

It isn't govt control, it's the MONEY.

If Imus gets another deal it will be because some sponsor is willing to pay for him to speak again. Or satellite radio isn't worried about attracting black or women listeners.

The reason people don't like what Imus said was because the women on the Rutgers basketball team aren't engaged in public discourse. They're not public figures, they don't have a forum, they aren't trying to influence public policy.

Imus should apologize to the Rutgers women -- and those women alone -- send them flowers, and stop kissing Al Sharpton's ring.

It's not democracy, it's capitalism. The only voting that went on here was the voting of money as firms decided that they did not want their products associated with racism.

I agree fully with the rest of your post though.

Ann Coulter is wrong most of the time and she's wrong here too. If the huge 'outcry' was due to the fact that these women had no 'say' in the matter and could not defend themselves then that could apply to any situation where a public figure attacks some other person who can't defend themselves. yet there isn't.

No, a minority took offense at a radio broadcaster and explained their criticism. His workplace then decided fire him.

The majority of posters here, at the least, seem to agree with the girls. Sure, some people are taking it way too far and making outrageous claims ("scarred for life!"), but that doesn't change the underlying principles at work here.

The government is not getting involved, so free speech isn't being infringed in the government sense.

The person involved made a pledge to those he worked with that he would not make racist remarks. The workplace seemed to call him on that very pledge after he did.

I don't quite get what the big deal here is.

If someone signs up to work with me, and I ask him to pledge not to look up women's skirts, but he does so anyways while on the job, I'm firing his ass. Period. End of discussion.

If I ask someone to pledge that they will not be rude to customers, and they're rude to customers, I'll fire their ass. Period. End of discussion.

There may be times for leniency, but that's up to me, the boss. Not up to you, the employee.

THEN there's the fact that, while Dustin goes around claiming that he's "proven" that it was not meant in a racist way, Don Imus specifically apologized for his actions, demonstrating either guilt or pseudo-guilt for his remarks. Even he knows he did something wrong, or is acting like he did something wrong, one or the other.

Isn't it the minority that our Constitution is actually trying to protect?

Didn't we abandon lynch mob majorities?

Isn't it the minority that ruin it for the Christian majority who want public displays at Christmas? Or do you think the majority SHOULD decide at Christmas what can be displayed on public grounds?
