I'm not religious enough to call myself...

Being as I'm older than you, we didn't have exemptions, so everyone was pretending.

Best bit was before my voice broke, so I enjoyed the singing, even though the tempo was more Anglican sluggish than Methodist brisk. And these were Proper Hymns, the real thing.

After my voice broke I mimed...
Exemptions? :sdl:

It would have been like Quentin Crisp's anecdote about after saying he didn't believe in god was asked by an audience member "Is it the protestant or catholic god you don't believe in?"

The kid would have been told, you can be a Methodist Muslim.

My next door neighbor is a deacon in the RC faith as practiced in Mexico. He does weekday masses at a small local chapel.
I am not religious. I used to be anti-religious.

Somehow this difference in beliefs has never caused us any disrespect at all.

You need a dark to know light, a hot to know cold. What changed is at this later point in my life there is no religion pushing me to be against it.

I like this simple coexistence in my life. I suspect they do too.

I coexist with everyone. Still, I'd just like to see people turning their back on superstion.

What I want and what is there to accept or reject are different things.
I live in a superstitious part of the world. Curses, hexes and all sorts of spirit beings are real enough to keep fake psychics busy as an industry.
I am relieved they are just catholic in thier side quest.

An old boss had to bless, pray, and have us wash off with barrels of water all the evils attacking his business. At least once a week. Then he lit candles to his Maria in the office to hold the cleansing.
He sold parts of stolen cars. No strangeness there.....

I trust no business person who invokes God or their religion on the job. If a boss did that in front of me, I would immediately be seeking other employment.

A close friend of mine is a world class chef/baker and chocolatier. And I'm not exaggerating. But my buddy is not a businessman. He took on a partner for his chocolate business. This guy would put on a show on how Christian he was. I didn't trust him at all. He used the business to defraud my friend as well as multiple banks, My friend went away on his honeymoon and while he was out of town, this Christian used the two million dollar line of credit and emptied the bank accounts and disappeared.

Many years ago, when we moved town, we had to find a new doctor. We signed up with one and I went to see him on some minor matter.

The first thing I saw was a bible on his desk.

I changed doctors the following day.

Perhaps he kept it out of sentimental reason, probably when he was younger it was still considered a treatment for a ganglion cyst....

It's not easy to get hired at 60 years old and I needed to create my own options for income.
I took any job that hired me and spent the better part of a years wages buying yard tools to that goal.
Pay is pay and that unholy mess of a job bought me a lot of stuff.
I got out after buying a lawnmower, four chainsaws and a pro grade trimmer or two.

And a ton of other stuff.

Now I am unemployed most of the time and my own boss! I keep getting sniped out of regular yards for a few pesos less.

You do what you have to do. I'm not criticizing anyone for doing that. I'm saying that I don't trust ostentatious displays of religiosity. Just count your fingers after you shake their hands.

My main contact with religion is when a chaplain comes into my room at, say, ICU-5 (most recently). Doesn't take them long to realize that I'm not interested in them. Thumpers apparently have spread the word that "1482" is a no-go zone. Having a full-size model of the Sword of Gryffindor helps that along nicely.

In days gone by Carrot Flower Queen would invite any god-botherer who knocked on her door in to inspect her crucifix...
