For various reasons, my doctor has commanded me, yes commanded, to cease and desist all consumption of caffeine. This includes:

Coffee
Tea :(
Cola :eusa_wall:
Chocolate :bricks:

I need help. I need to find herbal tea that does not taste like dishwater. I need to find something to perk me up in the afternoon at work. I need to find a man. Oops wrong thread. I need to find comfort food that works like chocolate.

All suggestions welcome!

Check out the Celestial Seasonings line. I realize they are so 1972, but nearly all of their teas have lots of flavor and no caffeine.

Check out licorice tea too, it's yummy.

If a doctor gave me an ultimatum to give up coffee, I'd give up my doctor.

Don't think I didn't consider that! :)

Well, I'm not going into particulars on here, but there are a couple of excellent reasons, and my doctor is actually correct, I'm sorry to say. I'm also under other orders as well, which I will be sharing as I go along. This is a no kidding around situation, so I'm going to be compliant for a long time. :(

Now that I think about it....

:lfault

I finally remembered the name of the Celestial Seasonings tea I used to like, it is called Red Zinger. It is very flavorful, but it may be an acquired taste.

I admire your willpower, LL.

At such times, I like to remind my doctor that at least I'm heroin-free. Then he always says "Well, that's because you never took heroin." "That's hardly the point", I tell him.

Anyway, have you tried carob? Not quite the same as chocolate, but it can be rather tasty. You have to experiment with different brands a bit, as some are better than others. Typically the ones with more fats and sugars, of course, so hopefully that's not an issue. Good luck, LL!

If you have a garden, fresh mint tea or lemon grass tea is great. Just put a handful of leaves in your tea pot, cover with boiling water and let it brew for about 5 minutes. Bought mint teas (ie. dried) are just awful in comparison.

I'll look for the Red Zinger and the carob, thanks. Don't admire my willpower until I've actually demonstrated it. It's only been three days.

My co-workers are being very patient, especially since I've been somewhat crabby.

Actually, not acquired, perfectly reasonable - and that goes for all their zinger line. Very tasty!! My wife and I both enjoy them.

Rooibus aka red tea. No caffiene, tastes like tea.
Also, Good Earth has some good stuff in the tea genre. Don't know how local or not that brand is.
And my deepest condolences on your devastating loss.

Back when Richard Roeper was a Chicago radio DJ, he used to ask his listeners, "If you had to go a week without coffee, cable or sex, which one would you choose?". :o

And the responses from his listeners were split about three way. :o

Myself, I couldn't go a week without coffee. :o

I'm a regular whole blood donor and take it very seriously and even to donate blood, I can't abstain from coffee for two or three days . Heck, I can hardly manage abstaining to 12 o'clock. Even though I know my regular iron level is normally too low for donation and four to six coffees and teas a day don't help. I compensate through iron supplements- that's easier than staying off coffee for two days.

I find amphetamines and cocaine both work reasonably well

joking... (not really)

Chai tea is especially good, though I'm not sure it's caffeine free. I agree that Celestial Seasonings teas are good (Raspberry Zinger, Cranberry Apple, Black Cherry) and I sometimes make iced teas out of them, too. Soda is available in caffeine free versions, and Starbucks makes a decent decaf.

I have been told to avoid caffeine, but not to that extent. Carob brownies are very nice, as just plain carob gets a bit boring after a while.

I drink decaffeinated tea, which seems to be fine for my heart. Tastes just like tea, (not really, but it's close enough). How about decaffeinated coffee? They still have a small amount of caffeine in them, but if you can't even eat chocolate, I'm guessing you aren't supposed to consume even small amounts.

There is also packet soup, but that usually has a fairly high salt content, and I'm guessing that if you have to avoid caffeine, there's a good chance you are cutting down on salt, too.

We have 'flavoured' teas over here, which taste just like hot cordial. I don't like them at all.

Also available is 'caro', as distinct from carob. It's a totally different thing to carob.

Also available is caffeine free diet coke, which I drink sometimes. (Although they seemed to find it necessary to up the salt content for some reason).

If you want to, you can also make your own vegetable and fruit juices. Apple, carrot and celery is a good mix for me.
