Illinois to criminalize sex...

I always wonder why some atheists say that "your dead body is not you".

I mean, if there is no soul (which I think), then where did "you" go?

You are your mind, which is the processes performed by the brain. When the body dies, the brain stops functioning and these processes are no longer performed.

Where does a person go when their body dies?
The same place the flame goes when the candle is extinguished.

They don't go anywhere, they simply cease to be.

I hereby consent that, after my death, my body may be used for whatever sexual acts anyone wishes to defile it with.
If underground inner circles of necrophiles exist, in the same way as pedophile rings exist, this could very potentially be included in their will. That would indeed make the activity look like ethically legitimate, a private issue between consenting adults. With mummifying technology, this could be everlasting love.

A body is owned by the next of kin. An owner should be able to do what they want with their property. If they want to have sex with it then they should be allowed to do so. Though what other relatives might think about this I am not sure. Maybe they need to consent as well?

If a third party (eg funeral worker) has unauthorized sex with a body then that is vandalism which would be similar to smashing a window of someone's house.

True enough.

What I was driving at was that the body is all that is left after death, as was the case in life. So to say "He's not in there any more" (something I've read from some atheists) is to use religious terminology, because there was nobody "in there" at any time., because we're not "in" our bodies, we "are" our bodies.

I used to have a really great computer. The motherboard burnt out. My computer died. Some people asked me to email them. I had to tell them that I didn't have a computer anymore because it had died.

I still had the box with all the wires and stuff. But I no longer had a computer. It had died.

The soul of my computer went to purgatory where it had to do penance for downloading pornography. The computer soul desperately wants to get to the heaven cloud, especially with all the computers just going directly to the cloud these days. But it has to print out a million trillion Hail Mary’s before it can join the computer heaven cloud. The afterlife of a computer is not all it is cracked up to be. Treat your computer’s soul well and pray for its forgiveness lest it spend eternity overclocking in depths of hell with no outlet fans at all! The Devil has put a hexadecimal on all computer souls and they must repent the temptation to calculate before marriage!

I presume that the prohibition against sex with a dead person only applies to a female. After all, can a male corpse get and sustain a woody? But, in that case, the law could be stricken on constitutional grounds based on sexual discrimination being illegal. :p

Have you never watched a sunset or sunrise? Language is rather imprecise and pre-dates much knowledge.

If you'd ever seen Weekend at Bernie's, you'd know that dead men are perfectly capable of satisfying female desire. :D But for a non-fictional reference, read the Wikipedia entry on Death Erection.

Plus, even if a male corpse lacks an erection, buggery is always an option.

So the law should apply equally to corpses of both genders.

Buggery is always an option.... sounds like some kind of hedonistic motto.

Read it in a deep voice and it makes a great tagline for a thriller. "In a world gone mad, one man will rise to the challenge. This summer... Top Gun 2. Buggery is always an option."

Guess this means that TSOL will have to stop playing "Code Blue" at gigs in Chicago then.

That works.

Then again, if someone dies, and is then resuscitated, did that person then cease to be for a moment?

Well, I suppose they did.

Never mind.

In other words, your dead body really is you, just a more lifeless you.

If anyone would say that "your dead body is not you", it should be people who believe in the soul, since they believe that the "self" leaves the body after death".

Not that a body is somehow sacred because of it, but it just seems odd to say it.

As a computer guy, it is the difference between a hard drive and a brick.

When all the stuff is working, and it is holding data, and all that good stuff , it is my hard drive. When it no longer does that, it is simply a brick, and gets a send off that i can only hope my body gets. Usually involving explosives, gasoline, and sometimes firearms.

Good analogy. Especially the explosives!

Sometimes a doorstop can be handy. ;)

Meh. I am indifferent. Necrophilia is something to frown on since most families don't want it to be legal for people to **** their loved ones' dead corpse, the weirdness aside. But I wouldn't care if it didn't hurt anyone I cared about. Which is the same reason I don't have any particular burial wishes (aside that they wait until I'm dead, of course).

The real problem with necrophiliacs is not that they have sex with dead bodies, but that they don't always wait patiently for a chance to get lucky. Some of them make their own luck... Kemper, Bundy, Dahmer, et al.
