If Democrats aren't racist, then why... aw screw it, they're racist.

No. But I do remember the late night news cast show the assassination of senator and his enterouge at the airport. I was about five at the time.

ETA:Looking it up I would have been 8. Which actually fits with the rest of my memories. Primarily where I was living at the time.
When you were looking it up, did you happen to notice it was called Jonestown, and not Jamestown?

I thought he was making a joke.

Given the tone of the OP, it would have been appropriate.

I think that the popint which Sanchez raised was that the GOP was trying to use race as a wedge issue and financing the most attractive candidate that they could in order to take away another seat from a district where they would have no chance otherwise.

Would the GOP set one racial; minority against another, knowing that they were going to uncork a big bottle of disharmony just to gain more power?

Bloody right they would.

You may be able to make a case for homophobic, something that clearly does exist in certain pockets on the left.

"Pockets" on the left? Sam Nunn was the spur of DADT, parading cameras through submarines, showing how the bunks, shared for sleeping in 3 shifts 'round the clock, were close, and, ick, you might have to get into a bunk a gay guy just left, ick! Maybe those are pockets, maybe the anti-DADT are the pockets, yea even unto the left, when you consider the bulk of voters.

There's a reason why gay marriage can't win at the ballot box. This country is still mostly against it. And you're exactly right that both parties have major factions against gays openly serving. That said, the vast majority of "pro-gay" activists are going to vote democratic this election, wouldn't you agree?

Nunn isn't exactly what anyone would call "left." Centrist at most, really more of a Zell Miller-style conservative Democrat.

Even if you do consider Nunn to be "left," the fact that he hasn't been in office since 1997 doesn't really make the case that there are more than "pockets."

Van Tran supporters are also referred to derisively as "Trannies",which is ok when done by the tolerant Left.

Like Upchurch, I'm curious for your source on this.

You appear to be making two claims in that sentence:
(1) that it is common for Democrats / liberals to refer derisively to Van Tran supporters as Trannies; and
(2) that when this is done, others on the Left have no objection to it.

I hang out at the Democratic-oriented site Daily Kos moderately often when I'm home, and I was completely unfamiliar with this. On the other hand, I've been away from home most of the past couple of months; so if this is something recent I could easily have missed it.

So I did a quick Google search last night of "Van Tran" trannies to see how widespread the practice of referring to Van Tran supporters derisively as trannies was. I came up with 7,140 hits, of which the vast majority had no relation to Van Tran.

Even on the first page of hits, the listing included things such as: how to do dodge tranny kit buy rotor for 2008 dodge caravan ... 2000 dodge van tran recall 2006 dodge charger srt-8 used cars dodge magnum; by the 10th page of hits, the majority were unrelated to the slur.

Of the hits which were relevant, a good number appeared to be right-wing sites pointing out the slur and left-wing sites condemning the slur. That left only a small number of sites on which people are actually making the slur.

So: the number of people making the tranny slur appears to be fairly insignificant. I doubt this is something which would be tolerated at Talking Point Memo, Daily Kos, or other prominent liberal and/or Democratic sites.

If you'd like, we can test it out.

(a) Please find me five instances where someone at Daily Kos has posted an article or comment calling Van Tran supporters trannies.

(b) Please find me five instances where someone at Talking Points Memo has posted an article or comment calling Van Tran supporters trannies.

(c) Please find me five instances where someone at firedoglake has posted an article or comment calling Van Tran supporters trannies.

(d) Please find me five instances where someone at ThinkProgress has posted an article or comment calling Van Tran supporters trannies.

(e) Please find me five instances where someone at Crooks And Liars has posted an article or comment calling Van Tran supporters trannies.

(f) Please find me five instances where someone at The Nation has posted an article or comment calling Van Tran supporters trannies.

(g) Please find me five instances where someone at The Progressive has posted an article or comment calling Van Tran supporters trannies.

These are 7 fairly major Democratic / liberal sites. If Democrats / liberals actually do commonly engage in the use of this derisive slur, as you imply they do, it should be fairly easy for you to find lots of examples.

You picked the derisive use of the word Trannies, in relation to supporters of Van Tran, as your example-of-choice for demonstrating how common racism / bigotry is among Democrats. Here is your opportunity to demonstrate just how widespread that racism / bigotry really is.

What kind of history do white people have of being economically marginalized in America?

Jamestown.

Man I'm not that good. I was just wrong. Jonestown not Jamestown.

I'm sorry, but what does Jonestown have to do with this? The people running the church (and the settlement) were almost all white with the congregation being mostly black. The settlement reflects that. Unlike Jamestown, there is ample evidence of what life was like at the settlement and who lived there. Thanks to the power of the internet, you can find many clips of Congressman Ryan and his entourage being ambushed and shot. If anyone associated with the People's Temple was economically marginalized, it was done by Jim Jones, a white man.

That's why I originally said "Jamestown". Those white people had it tough.

Yeah, that's kind of my point. If white people were ever economically marginalized, it was by other white people.

So there's a difference between minorities complaining about being economically marginalized and white people complaining about being economically marginalized. One has a basis in reality, and the other is the paranoid delusion of fear-mongers and ignoramuses.
