ID:ers not being killed... yet

What almost every born again or Ider I've talked to has in common is the inabillity to comprehend the irony of demanding free speech while at the same time shouting down those that would disagree with them.

Since coming to this board in 2000 and something I have been overwhelmed by the way that others with different opinions are not only allowed but welcomed to this theatre.

In my lifetime the religious community has gone from overt bullying to claiming victimhood, simply because someone stood up to the bullying.

Ben Stein is an idiot! A dangerous idiot but an idiot all the same. Can I say that sort of thing here?

That'd be a lot of people to genocide: most of America, the Middle-East, Islam, Native Americans, and many other cultures.

Heck; there would be almost no on left on earth if people who thinks the Earth looks designed were killed.

bolding mine
so you know a lot of native americans do you ? know all about their beliefs?

Ahhh, but the average religious conservative voter--raised to believe the unquestionable superiority of their nation and religion--are the one who have been convinced they're being threatened. Whether Stein and Co. actually agree with that idea or it's just a cynical ploy for financial or political gain , they have tapped into the anxieties of a significant segment of American society. A segment that feels that nefarious forces (e.g. "liberals," "atheists," "leftists," "secularists," etc.) are attacking the very source (i.e. religion) of all order, freedom (oddly enough), and morality in human civilization.

In other words, whether or not they are actually as insane as they sound, they've found a stark raving mad audience to sell their lies to, and that audience sucks it up like mother's milk? :D

To religious fundamentalists, having to tolerate someone happily professing a different belief, or no belief at all, and/or living a different life than their own is persecution indeed. To a religious fundamentalist leader, having to tolerate someone not obeying HIM and not giving HIM money is plain torture.

Id love to see an MST3k version of expelled! Unfortunately, Mike Nelson of MST3k is a bit of a right wing christian himself, sorry to say...

That's all right. I appreciate his comedy writing, but there isn't a rule that I have to agree with his religious beliefs. A lot of MST3K fanfiction writers go after fundamentalist religious propaganda anyway. The show was what it was because of the quality of writing, not because of Mike Nelson's religious beliefs. One of my acquaintances from Steve's site, The White Coyote, put it best.

A photographer sells his photos, not his beliefs. A painter sells his paintings, not his beliefs, a sculpture sells his sculptures, not his beliefs. I have spoken to many war photographers and journalists who were commissioned to photograph and write about war. That does not mean they are war mongers or even in favor of the war. Separating yourself from your task is crucial. I "have known" many warriors that had to totally remove their "souls" (for lack of a better word) to accomplish their tasks. You want to be a professional photographer then you are selling an image not endorsing anything except quality photographs.
Besides, appreciating someone's work doesn't mean idolizing them or hanging on their every word. Also, we can always use Joel if all else fails.

Wow! I just lost a huge amount of respect for Ben Stein. Up to this point my opinion was that he was a good guy who was just simply wrong on this matter. I've read some intelligent things he's written on other subjects and just looked at it as another case of a smart person making a fool of himself when speaking outside his field, like Einstein once did regarding some crazy geological theory. But this is just over the top. This is just fear-mongering. "Stop these evolutionists now or they will be killing you later." Just appalling.

As for the insinuation that there is a conspiracy to silence people for challenging evolutionary science: Show us the evidence. Could it be that some have ruined their own careers by publishing rally shoddy science? I'm sure that an astronomer who insisted that the universe was Geocentric would find his career opportunities limited without any involvement of a conspiracy.

They do want freedom of speech for themselves that they don't seem very keen on others having.
