I have a problem with Harry Potter

That disreputable wizard whose name I've forgotten basically looted Sirius's mirror from his house along with some other stuff and Aberforth bought it.

IIRC there is something in the book when Harry is first given it - he gets the impression that it's something that will lead Sirius to come out of hiding if used, and he's determined not to risk that? - that tries to justify him putting it aside unopened, but it's very weak.
Ah yes.

Not sure it's that weak though. They had contacted Sirius via the Floo network just before Christmas, which very nearly got him caught by Umbridge. Harry gets the mirror just after that, but he's determined not to risk Sirius' capture again. Probably justified in that Umbridge steps up her regime after christmas, including using veritaserum on students to get them to spill the beans.

Edit: For what it's worth, I found http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Muggles'_Guide_to_Harry_Potter/Books is a good place to look things up.

I've warned my niece who's reading all the books to her oldest son, now 8 years old, that we might want to wait on OotP.

My son is 8, nearly 9, and he enjoyed all the books immensely. (I did voices!) We finished the series at least a year ago, and he has also watched all the movies (at home, on the DVD player, so he could stop it during the scary parts if necessary).

My daughter, who is two years younger than her brother, bailed out of Deathly Hallows about halfway through, though she has watched both movies now (on Mummy/Daddy's lap!).

The 8 year old is super sensitive and upset easily. However, I've watched about 2/3 of the movie at this point and it seems to skip a lot of the action. I'm hoping that now that I know that Umbridge gets hers, I can read the book more comfortably.

Just to throw in my two cents, I enjoyed Books 1 - 3, disliked 4 & 5, liked 6, and disliked 7. I almost didn't get through 7 - it didn't seem like it was going to be worth it, and except for one particular plot twist...it wasn't.
