I Hate Windows 8.

Seem to have partly fixed blurred fonts by reducing the resolution from 1920x1080 to 1776x1000.

Its not totally fixed but at least its readable!

I removed 8 from my desktop a couple years ago, and went to 7 Home Premium.
With my desire to go to a laptop, I tried one with Google Chrome.
Awful!
Swapped that box for a Windoze 8.1 laptop.
Equally awful!
Returned that one also... all this took just 2 days.
Got a Windows 7 Home Premium off e-bay, and have been very happy.
I used the laptop to show a store owner at the Mall where to go on the 'net to find more toys for his store just today!
Love that Mall-wide wifi!
 
I got my new computer set up with Windows 8.1, customized by me to get back to mostly working like Windows 7.

I just did the 24 updates and now can't get more than a limited connection to the internet. Reboots of the computer, router, and re-adding the network don't work. I'm now back to using my Windows 7 computer for the time being. For any internet work, obviously.
 
I installed classic shell, and was actually happy with Win 8.1

But now a I suddenly have issues with Limited connection on the WiFi

It seems to come and go.
 
Just yesterday watched some videos about Win 8.

I thought that instead of griping about it like an old man, I might as well learn to use it properly.

Only now I understand what MS was trying to do: replace the start button with the Metro interface.
Everything that used to be in the start menu can now be found in Metro.

This really was not intuitive, I just got massively confused when I ended up in Metro. Metro itself is pretty counter-intuitive actually.
 
Has anyone got much experience with Chromebooks? I've been pondering getting one when my laptop finally dies... I pretty much use it as an internet device already, I do all of my uni work on Google Drive, the only thing I really use the HDD storage for is downloading TV shows - starting to wonder why I bother spending $1000 on all this hardware I barely utilise.
 
So....Wow.
My wife's cheap Win7 laptop is dying, so I bought her a new one for Xmas....Win8.1. I was playing with such a machine at the bookstore...eeecchh.... At least, rather counter-intuitive as all of this thread indicates.
So, what's the consensus? I've seen a couple of YouTube vids on how to make the functionality more like 7....One says to download the software indicated in this thread early on... Another says you don't need to.

She is not very tech-y so I would like to get this thing set up to be useable before I give it to her.
 
^^ It runs better than 7 - my first upgrade from 7 to 8 on my last laptop resulted in an appreciable improvement, once you get past the idiocy of metro and just use it like you would any previous version then it's just a case of minor irritations (like the stupid unlock screen that you have to click away before you can enter your password, the slight lag almost always results in me missing a character and having to type the bloody thing in again).
 
Maybe it's an "age" thing :). We gave our kid an 8.1 laptop for her 13th birthday 3 weeks ago to replace a dead Vista machine. She took to 8.1 no problem. Was able to run everthing she was using before and has asked zero questions so far. All I have had to do for her was add our anti-virus subscription software to her laptop. My suggestion - if 8.1 is giving you grief find a 13 yo to set it up for you.
 
I'm 40, and aside from briefly wondering how to power the thing off, I have had no real issues with 8. I ignore the Metro interface almost completely.
 
I am now trying to recover my fairly new computer. I did a System Restore to a time before the recent updates. Apparently it didn't work. Now Automatic Repair isn't working. WTF is System Restore good for if it doesn't restore your system??? Now it's just sitting on the initial splash screen (20 minutes so far). I have no idea if it is doing anything but I am going to leave it alone for a couple hours.

I have been through this before (System Restore not working) on another computer, so the first thing I do on any new computer is make a recovery disc. We'll see if this one works.

Did you install Classic Shell, though?

Otherwise you can't get around Metro.
 
I had the intermittent 'limited connection' problem just as you say where I was renting until a few months ago. It also seemed to start immediately after doing one of the Windows 8 upgrades (after months of problem-free connections), and I never did figure it out before I moved. It was quite aggravating.

ETA: and no longer occurs in my new place with my new wireless ...

The only issues I had with 8 on my desktop system disappeared when I replaced my monitor with a touchscreen. Made sense, 8.1 worked great on my laptop/tablet and phone (all with touch screens). Much faster, more stable. I run into occasional app issues but most of that seems to be problems in the apps, not OS problems. (ps- I'm in my mid 60s)
 
Well after trying several variations of restarts (and getting messages that none of them worked) it seems to have completed the restore I selected. I thought it was not supposed to do anything with files but apparently EVERYTHING is reset to that point. I had recently migrated all my documents and emails from my older computer. Now I have to do it again. ("Never delete anything unless you have a backup of your backup.")

I got one, and now I use my desktop once or twice a month. There are constraints in performance (don't run 50 extensions like I did) or heavy duty things, but for a tiny thing with crazy battery life at a dirt cheap price, it was worth the money. No moving parts is awesome. It is the right niche of software and hardware for me.
