She attacked an innocent person based solely on that person's ethnicity. That's not random, and if the identities of the respective parties were in another configuration, very few people on this thread would be questioning it's suitability for discussion. Very few would be cracking witless jokes. I fully understand the politics and power differentials, but, like the beatings being handed out to easily identifiable Jews in Brooklyn, it's a story suitable for attention.

I find it hard to believe that someone would, otherwise unprovoked, punch someone simply because they had a different skin colour. There's something else going on. People don't just walk up to people and punch them.

It's an interesting aspect, no doubt about that. Another is, especially considering what's been happening to Jews in NY, if attacks on innocent members of ethnic groups seen as oppressors might be starting to trend. And if so, will future incidents of this type be dismissed as contemptuously as we see here.

Is it a trend?

The looking for “bad people on both sides” happens a lot. The reaction of the Australian Home Affairs minister to our intelligence agency highlighted the threat of white supremacist neo Nazi groups was to talk about left wing political movements.
 
I know often there is more information available about arrests in the USA than in my country. Are we able to see the actual charges and statements?

This is essentially a "living while white" thread, and as you say it proves nothing.

At the same time and for the same reasons all the "living while black" threads prove nothing.

Articles about violent racism inflicted on black people are Daily Mail click bait.

My best guess is that there will be a plea bargain.

On blacks murdering whites based on race, we've had a couple of examples:
