Hussein to Iraqis, "Be Forgiving"

Only he truly knows.

Truly? Maybe so, but rationally the right conclusion based on his past behavior indicates he does NOT mean what he said, and we should go with that until evidence indicates otherwise, which it won't because he'll be dead soon.

Saddam makes no distinction between "right" and "wrong" by anyone's measure. He is only looking out for himself, no-one else. He doesn't even give a rat's patootie about his fellow convicts of his own cadre. They can swing, for all he really cares.

It has been ever thus for Saddam. His world of caring stops about an inch in front of his nose.

Well, whatever his motives, if he can in any way be useful in aiding some peace process, by all means let him. He may be just trying to buy time, but so what?

Yeah...that's kinda what I mean.

Look, if it seems like I'm defending him or saying that he is good because of this statement, I'm not. I imagine Saddam's had ample time facing a death sentence (did anything think the ultimate outcome of his trial wasn't a death sentence?) while sitting in prison to reflect on his life and the actions that led him to the place he's at now. No telling what's gone on in that head. The only person who does know, is him.
