Hpathy Pops Up

This really belongs in the computer forum, but I'm not sure how many Hpathy lurkers follow that forum.

Generally I am untroubled by nuisance pop-up windows (thank you Safari), but after visits to Hpathy up they pop. I've read scuttlebut there about their e-mail notifications of posts carrying viruses, which of course they blame on sabotage by sceptics (it so enhances their self-important victim status), so I assume they just manage their forum software very badly.

Has anyone else had this problem at Hpathy? Given that safari is meant to be blocking pop-ups and generally works, is there anything else I can do?

That's funny. I have actually stopped getting pop-ups from hpathy. Maybe they went over to you ;).

I too never get any pop ups there.

To be accurate about this, Hans said his had stopped, which is a rather different statement.

They clearly have major management problems if they actually send out viruses with their e-mail notifications

BSM: You could always follow the latest net fad and download Firefox, but instead of proclaiming that it solves all your problems, you only use it to browse the Hpathy forums. ;)

Anway, it's not the worst browser I've used (Opera and IE are currently sharing the lead on that), and it's pretty good at blocking popups. If your computer's very old and running on an old Windows edition, it does have a tendency to not show small .gif files (i.e. smilies) properly as you scroll up and down. But if you don't have an antique computer like me, that shouldn't be a problem.

I've heard that pop-up authors are using a new technique that gets around a lot of the blockers. Dunno what it is though, but it's increasingly irritating me. Hopefully the next release of Safari might sort it out.

Could comeone explain the origin of pop-ups, please?

Do site owners know about them and are they responsible for allowing them or do they hijack a site in a way that is difficult for site owners to stop?

I think they are something the host introduces. The server owner, or web hotel, sells pop-up advertizing. Whether they are connected to your site or not depends on the price you are prepared to pay.

Of course, site owners may also make their own pop-ups, either for advertizing of their own or for selling. .. Although it requires rather heavy traffic these days to get more than pennies for online advertizing.

If your OS is windows, installing yahoo tool bar will block all most all pop ups.

Better still, change to Firefox. The pop up stopper is built into the browser.

The official service pack is 2. But, the later day to day updates are being referred as service pack 3.

BSM is a Mac user, so service packs will not help him!

According to another thread in the Computers forum, some of these popups are caused by Javascript - disabling that may fix the problem (if your browser allows it - of course being a Mac it's possible that it will decide that Javascript is something you don't need to worry your pretty little head about, and not give you the option ;) ) Mind you that may have knock-on effects on sites where you'd like to see Javascript working.

They are very annoying. I don't know why people persist in including them.

Javascript can be disabled in Safari through Preferences/Security.

There's also a number of intriguing options in the debug menu (if it's activated). Two of these are "Always Check for World Leaks" and "Populate History". I've never tried using them, in case I actually detect a World Leak or inadvertantly populate history with cats smeared in guacamole. Can anyone tell me what they might do...?
